Update: I am revising my plan to watch as the episodes aired, and instead am going to watch them as they should have aired. I will be starting with the 90 minute pilot, Serenity.

23 years ago today Firefly premiered with the Train Job, although the episode was released out of order. Episode 11, Serenity, was the actual first episode of the series.

As I have not watched the show in years, I decided it is time to watch again.

Didn’t even know this show existed until my friend, back at uni, lent me Serenity (movie) and told me, “just watch it”.

Dammit if that wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever watched in this verse.

When I returned it, he told me, now watch the show. “There’s a show?!”

A show which fox canceled. Curse them and their sudden but inevitable betrayal!

In case you guys were unaware, there are books, too. I’ve only been able to find one (Firefly - Big Damn Hero), but it was spectacular!

Ah early high school (why do my knees suddenly hurt?), I still remember hearing radio ads for the show while sitting in my brother’s car on the way there. The line that sold it for me was that “The toughest guy on the ship is named Jayne.”

Somewhere on what are probably now bit-rotted burnt discs, I have two leaked versions of the original version of the pilot episode that Fox rejected (they didn’t open the episode with the Battle of Serenity Valley) - which forced them to start with The Train Job. After a few eps of the show aired initially, I was so hooked I went looking for more info online on a show for the first time ever. I wound up downloading my first videos ever via Pirate Bay torrents.

The official Fox website for the show apparently had been uploading short teaser videos regularly (weekly, I think), replacing it each time so if you missed prior ones you were SOL. I’ve never found them - wish someone had them.
