I eat oatmeal almost every morning and I’m looking for options to change things up a bit. My go to is usually old fashioned oats with diced apples, raisins, and cinnamon. Sometimes I’ll add some candied ginger.
I was thinking of making savory oats, but I love my sweet oats in the morning so I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
I’m big on fruits and dairy. Berries and butter, cream and tree fruits, cheese and apples, even sour cream with roasted apples (seriously, it’s better than it sounds).
Sometimes I’ll go savory, do some cheese cubes and sauage, maybe crumble in bacon and pepper it up with some butter too. Oooh! Goat cheese, dates, and bacon!
But warming spices tend to be a great base for additions across the board. Cinnamon, some allspice, nutmeg, maybe mace and cloves, cumin even. Whatever mix I’m in the mood for. You can go sweet on top of that, maybe brown sugar or maple. Add fruits. Or just go with just the spices plus salt.
Mind you, that’s quick oats microwaved or stovetop. Instant oats like in packets, I tend to just add a little milk or a juice and leave it at that.
Which, btw, a little fruit juice brings sweetness and taste to any oatmeal. You can even cook oats in it just fine.
I don’t. I just let it go out into the hard cruel world and figure shit out for itself.
Eple syltetøy (like applesauce with bits in, not as sweet), Hapå (a Norwegian spread that is kind of butterscotch-y? Hard to describe.), honey, and walnuts. Salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Add frozen blueberries while it’s cooking
Same, sometimes woth honey (after cooking!) or sliced banana for sweetness
I like savory oats. I usually add chili crisp, sometimes furikake instead. I also like to add kimchi or Chinese pickles, and some lightly fried tofu. Sometimes I’ll take the time to make it like yachae juk
Oh yeah, adding chili crisp would be amazing. Thinking of it like juk makes total sense.

I like to add basically a chai spice mix. I’m a snob when it comes to chai, so I’ll mortar/pestle up spices to use for chai, and I’ll often do enough at once for multiple batches (even though it’s best completely fresh). It goes really well in oats. If you want the lazier version, “pumpkin spice” mix in the US is basically a chai spice mix.
For savory oats, I treat it like congee. There’s a lot of ways to make it, but you can either take it in a western direction (chicken stock, bacon, fried eggs, etc) or more Asian (dashi/miso stock, soy sauce, sesame, ramen egg, etc.).
I’ve got some chai masala I could throw in there!
With a little bit of honey, chia seeds, and vanilla extract. But cold and made overnight in the refrigerator. Then with some fresh fruit thrown on top before eating.
Chocolate powder and some milk to turn it into a chocolate porridge.
I’ve switched from microwave to stovetop and find that I enjoy the texture much more when prepared via stovetop.

Steel cut oats, dash of coconut sugar while cooking, frozen blueberries, and a big spoon of yogurt at the end.
I peanut butter, bananas, berries, walnuts, and cinnamon into my oatmeal. Not necessarily all at the same time.
If you like sweet oats, you can add fruit jam to them too.
I’ve done fruit jam before, as a treat. It’s really good. I like mixing sunflower butter in with it so it’s like PB&J.
