anything that requires ongoing updates, subscription, or storage is going to be a risk. we can’t even support data centers and also the cities where they build them without rolling blackouts and water shortages. but their prioritising the data centers anyway because they this Ai is going to pay off whatever damage the blackouts cause
Maybe putting a fascist saluting drugged up weirdo in charge of all the computer systems was a bad look.
Hopefully it’s not about Trump but the understanding that relying on proprietary software might sound nice in a short term but certainly will be devastating in the long(or short sometimes) term.
That sucks because it isn’t the average Americans doing anything it’s these fucking psycho billionaires and their cronies. This behavior is going to kill American jobs.
Average America voted in a majority for the House and Senate, as well as a psycho billionaire as president, and a majority of the state legislatures and governors. Average America can have they day they fucking voted for.
They didn’t know what they were voting for, and the effects won’t be limited to their borders. It is in all of our interests to educate them.
They didn’t know what they were voting for
Yes they most certainly did. Their plan was published a year before the election and was widely disseminated under the name Project 2025. Many conservatives liked the plan or knew that Democrats didn’t like it and just wanted to spite them. The ones claiming they were fooled simply weren’t listening to what was actually being said.
It is in all of our interests to educate them.
Have you seen how Americans treat educators? Anti-intellectualism is a driving force in this country’s politics. Best idea is to cut us off as much as you can and prepare to defend your countries as we lash out in our death throes.
Yeah that’s a cute meme but a fascist country with nukes will kill us all.
I doubt they’ll learn anything, even if they ended up in Gilead.
Well we have to do something. What do you propose?
I’ve worked for open source companies for a while now and a lot of our business was from European organizations for exactly this reason.
Who’s the most fleshed out replacement for something like GCP / AWS in your opinion?
On prem or colo.
You know what’s less risky than using corporate systems at all? FOSS
Are there any good FOSS email providers? Like…I don’t want to deal with setting up my own email service, that sounds like a nightmare. I used Proton for a bit and even that got me spam filtered out of a lot of important communications.
What’s a “FOSS email provider”?
An email provider that uses FOSS products under the hood but operates as a normal for-profit company?
Fastmail.
Fair enough, I use webhosting with Mythic Beasts for my domain and I just decided to use their email hosting too for my domain, it’s way too hard for a small player to set up their own email and be viewed as trustworthy, with all the things the big companies do - I feel you for that one.
The switch won’t be instant but we are moving into that direction. When contracts run out with US tech firms they won’t be renewed and alternatives will be sought out. Slowly but surely.
As the alternatives start to gain market share, their products will become more feature rich. This will lower the barrier for adoption and increase the rate of transition.
Same in my mostly government-focused industry
The nature, it’s healing.
Can’t corroborate from my personal perspective. If anything it seems that the EU proving to be entirely toothless and fundamentally unwilling to do anything other than fold completely flat for Trump has emboldened the industry reliance on US public clouds for upcoming projects.
Now I don’t work on the business side so I can’t speak to exact customer pressure/feedback, but what am I supposed to say to a project manager who defaults to Azure/AWS for hosting a new product? It’s more convenient and reliable than the alternatives, and there is no structural risk to that decision given that the EU would sooner get rid of the GDPR than admit that user data isn’t secure on US servers.
At this point I almost feel like I should wear a tinfoil hat to suggest using an indigenous public cloud provider.
