McCourt wants to build a decentralized version of the internet where individual users, not tech companies, own the data from their online lives.

The internet is already decentralized. People just choose to use centralized services, either because their friends use the same services (network effect), or it’s what they’re familiar with.

Or they never property learned to use computing devices. Those companies exploited the lack of knowledge from people and made them dependent on their services.

Basic problem solving isn’t part of computing for most people because it’s been engineered out

if a 5 year old can use a phone it’s not because the 5 year old is smart it’s because the designer of the phone was.

There are also some economic constraints that almost always make centralization cheaper. Resiliency almost always requires redundancy, and that costs more.

Great. I’m sure another billionaire spunking money into a social media app will fix everything.

    https://edition.cnn.com/2022/12/16/tech/tim-berners-lee-inrupt-spc-intl/index.html

He could support Tim Berners-Lee’s project rather than try to reinvent a shittier version of it for one app.

Make it so incredibly annoying to maintain. Break it just enough so they don’t start from scratch, but still have to waste shitloads if time sorting everything out.

It won’t change anything about how the internet works. It might change how things like Xitter work.
