Fun killer bee fact: back in the '70s everybody (in the US) was worried about “killer bees” (aka Africanized bees) migrating northwards from Central America and killing tons of people because of their higher levels of aggression as compared to European bees. Turns out that if you take an Africanized queen and raise it in a temperate climate, the bees she produces are no more aggressive than European bees; likewise a European queen raised in a tropical climate will produce bees every bit as aggressive as Africanized bees. So the whole thing was just stupid bee racism all along.

So the bad news is that anthropomorphic global overheating (don’t give me that weak “climate change” formulation) is going to give us killer bees even without the migration of Africanized stock. The good news is that we’re completely fucked anyway and won’t give a shit about a few bee stings.

I desperately want to post this good news on both the uplifting news and the “only hopeful/helpful/productive comments” climate subs.

They’re still out there, Koala knows why. It’d be nice if Lemmy and it’s associated apps were all on the same page with regards to hosting capabilities.

Edit: Accidentally placed my response as it’s own comment.

There is definitely a fairly large subset of problems that are rather effectively solved by running away from them.

The issue appears when the problems are of your own creation but you simply run away instead of solving the underlying issue. So if you keep kicking beehives, you should stop doing that.

Bees attack more if you run, you’re supposed to make yourself look as large as possible to scare them away.

A bee weights about a tenth of gram so that’s ten grams and is 12.7mm long so 1.27m.

        Math checks out.

Don’t forget that the snout is the most sensitive part of the bee. If they confront you, an open palm to the snout is sure to drive them off

Back when I was a kid they used to teach us stop drop and roll but one time I was walking my dearest shit zoo Misty at Laney Creek Park and ended up stepping in a fire ant nest tried to stop drop and roll but I think it only made the ants sting more.

You don’t have to outrun the bear, you have to outrun the other people running from the bear. Unless you’re by yourself.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

The rules are simple:

  • The post can be a single image, an image gallery, or a link to a specific comic hosted on another site (the author’s website, for instance).
  • The comic must be a complete story.
  • If it is an external link, it must be to a specific story, not to the root of the site.
  • You may post comics from others or your own.
  • If you are posting a comic of your own, a maximum of one per week is allowed (I know, your comics are great, but this rule helps avoid spam).
  • The comic can be in any language, but if it’s not in English, OP must include an English translation in the post’s ‘body’ field (note: you don’t need to select a specific language when posting a comic).
  • Politeness.
  • Adult content is not allowed. This community aims to be fun for people of all ages.
