Bob Ross really said it was a skill issue
Flexed on em too
And then proceeds to show everyone each episode that the skill threshold is really quite low to paint. Painting as well as he does is pretty tough but almost all of his techniques were very simple.
I’d love to see (it probably exists and I haven’t looked) for someone similar to Bob Ross but for acrylics. I think acrylics are easier to get into than oil paints, both in cost and usage. But I think it’s a bit different in painting technique.
Really beat the devil out of him
Obligatory fun fact, Bob Ross speaks the way he does because, in military boot camp, he felt like everyone was too aggresive and angry and he promised himself he would never use that tone with people.
I remember that story mostly cause I like the image in my mind if a Bob Ross really not fitting in in the military, haha.
He served for 20 years, it wasn’t just boot camp. In that time he learned to paint, and eventually earned more money painting than he was getting in the Air Force and retired. The core is accurate though, he said that he was tired of being mean and didn’t want to yell anymore.
His time in the military also heavily influenced his landscape paintings. He was stationed in Alaska, and thought it had some of the most breathtaking landscapes he had ever seen. That’s why so many of his paintings feature rolling mountain ranges and evergreens.
What time period did he serve? He’s not that much older than my dad, who was also stationed in Alaska when he was in the military. Kinda wonder if they met or had a chance to have, at least.
I didn’t want to cite the years because I wasn’t sure on that point, but wow I forgot it was that long.
I knew he did both but thought he painted after he left the armed forces like as a hobby at first. Thanks for the new info. I never actually followed or watched much of him but do remember seeing him regularly enough channel surfing way back then.
He felt that he was too angry. He kept the afro that he wore because he said that it’s a soft look and his other hair reminded him of who he was. He used to have cool, attitude, greaser hair.
“Fuck, I’m out of yellow. Uhhh, I’ll just do a grey one and make up a story about a colorblind guy. They’ll love it.”
J/k I don’t doubt the story
Yeah, “anyone can paint” is a big theme that Bob harped on a lot through the series run. He talks about it almost every episode, and that’s kind of the point of “the joy of painting”. It’s not a talent show, it’s to show you that it’s a lot more fun and less difficult than you might think.
Hell, even making abstract paintings is fun. Just get some paint and make a mess.
And then post to !artshare https://lemmy.world/c/artshare
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn’t work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !artshare@lemmy.world
Good bot!
The guy who makes and sells his own paints running out of ochre would be hilarious though.
It’s funny you mentioned yellow, because at the end of this episode he also unveils a nearly identical painting he did with sepia tones instead. He only used white, black, and a burnt umber (deep brown) to mix the sepia tones.
I for one would like to see Gordon Ramsay host the worlds angriest painting show.
Have you seen the British version of this show? Hes a completely different person, with a mission to help the restaurant improve.
I have. For the past 10 years, cooking shows have been trending towards something Bob Ross could host.
I stopped watching cooking shows about 5 years ago because they had essentially given up any claim to being educational. They were all reality shows based off the most current trends.
I adore the Great British Bake Off. It’s a competition but if competitions were made of kindness and understanding.
I don’t even care about baking and I love the GBBO just for the sake of seeing a TV series where everyone is nice to each other for a change. Even the mean guy.
That is one I do particularly love.
Painting Donuts with Gordon Ramsay
And the special edition DVD disk with bloopers and outtakes has the tagline “You fucking donkey!”
“So I showed him that its not his disability, just his glaring lack of talent.”
Bob Ross was a gift to the whole human species, we didn’t deserve him.
Bob accidentally dunks on a colorblind guy
My brain still can’t comprehend that picture is all grey
The pictures isn’t all grey. The painting is, but Bob, his shirt, etc. are all in color. :)
I love that this comment implies the other dude has color blindness but never realizes it his whole life lol
Well - it’s true I can’t paint or draw to save my life…
points fingerguns
Leave.
I’ve seen this episode a few times, and it turns out great. Your brain sort of fills in the gaps.
Recently been to an exhibition by Robert Ryman in Musée l’orangerie in Paris, and it only contained paintings in white. And as strange as that might sound, it was quite interesting to see all the creativy that’s possible within such restrictions. His work focused on all other aspects, such as the subtle differences in whiteness, the texture of the paint and the way it’s displayed in it’s surroundings. Wouldn’t recommend it to everyone, but if you’re interested in visual art then it’s worth a visit. It makes you aware of elements that you could otherwise easily forget.
Besides it’d probably be fascinating to hand a colorblind painter a full palette and see what happens. A red/green colorblind artist might accidentally paint an autumn landscape mistaking red for green. Or it turns out nicely bizarre. I think it opens a conversation, we talk about how “is your red the same as my red” but what happens when it objectively is not?
Wasn’t there an artist who was developing cataracts and his paintings drifted into softer pastel colors?
Monet
oh no
Gets killed by SCP-096
Goobertown Hobbies is basically the Bob Ross of painting minis
just to show that any one can paint. What about the blind?
Really thick acrylic paints, layered and contoured to make a painting that can be appreciated by touch.
They can have a go, it’ll probably be shit though.
No rules UFC-style cage match between Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers. Only one man comes out alive. Which man is the victor?
I love Bob Ross, but Mr. Rogers won the Ultimate Showdown.
“Many lives were claimed but eventually, the champion stood, The rest saw the better, Mr. Rogers in a blood stained sweater.”
Yuh Bob was a Master Sgt for medical admin in the USAF, but Mr Rogers was Marine infantry.
Nah, I’d paint.
