    Stupid question:

What is the commercial comparison? Like vine/Instagram video/YouTube shorts?

I’m old and I don’t understand how those social media platforms above work but I’m willing to figure it out to add content to the fediverse.

Yeah, Vine (now defunct) is probably the originator. YouTube has Shorts, Instagram has Stories, and it’s the same in WhatsApp. Snapchat has one, Facebook has one, X has one (or used to? I’m not sure)… They are a part of most social media at this point, almost as ubiquitous as posts, shares, and links. Of course, TikTok is king right now their main innovation is inclusion of licensed music and removing most of the interface so that one video just flows into the next.

Seems like it’s less a problem with pixelfed and more an issue with pixelfed.social?

Yes and no. Technically yes because the issue seems only to affect pixelfed.social; however, that happens to be the largest instance iirc. And hash tags are not federated, so one of the main features for discovery that is accessed from the landing page is unusable or broken (has been for months).

Meanwhile, people are out there talking and reading about this cool federated alternative to instagram called pixelfed, perhaps spending a few minutes browsing the site for the largest instance which also happens to have the word pixelfed in the URL, but as soon as they try interacting with it, they bounce off because they clicked on a link hoping to get more nature photos, but got an error instead. 🤷‍♂️
