On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 80% of 46 critics’ reviews are positive. The website’s consensus reads: “A solid, atmospheric creature feature that entertains without attempting to be deeper than it needs.”[9] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 68 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating “generally favorable” reviews.[10]
Leonard Maltin awarded the film three out of four stars, writing: “Archetypal '50s monster movie has been copied so often that some of the edge is gone, but … is still entertaining, with juicy atmosphere and luminous underwater photography sequences.”

Yeah I also seen several references to this movie in the last week or so. Including a “10 things you didn’t know about” from Minty that was just released.
I’ll have to look for that. Making things more strange to me is that I’ve never seen the movie, and so very rarely even think about it - let alone actually mention it.
