I appreciate that ProtonVPN offers ipv6 support for their linux client, however my home internet (Tmobile) doesn’t work at all when ipv6 is turned on
So I have to turn it off via settings:
IPv6 Tunnels IPv6 traffic through the VPN. Can enhance compatibility with IPv6 networks.
My question is, does turning it off post any privacy risk, e.g. IPv6 leak? or compatibility issues in general?
Thanks!
No, disabling ipv6 shouldn’t impact your privacy. But, I’d go ahead and also disable ipv6 at the OS level and router if possible.
Are you sure it is the ipv6 setting causing problems? Did you test multiple servers? Proton only supports routing ipv6 through the vpn not connecting with ipv6 so nothing about the connection to the server should be different. It is possible that proton has a bad ipv6 config on one of the servers or ipv6 on your device is setup incorrect.
T-Mobile only has IPv6 support actually and does not have IPv4. Could be running into other issues as I don’t believe disabling IPv6 will resolve your issue.
Friendly reminder T-Mobile exists outside of USA and in other countries they do use IPv4
Sorry, I couldn’t read the poster’s mind that they are outside of the U.S. 😅 Next time I try to assist someone I’ll make sure to work on that skill a bit harder. I’m glad you were able to help them solve their issue. 🙂
I’d even say disabling ipv6 if you’re not using it is more secure. The less you expose, the better.
Came here to say this
DISABLE IPV6 AT YOUR ROUTER!
The last thing you need is a way for malware to directly access every device on your network, directly, with no NAT protection
Proton runs IPv6 6 through a nat and properly blocks incoming connections so that is not a problem here. Also while it isn’t the default on all routers it is still entirely possible for the router to have a firewall on IPv6 connections so no incoming connections can connect to your devices unless you have allowed it.
I am not super knowledgeable about networking
But reading IPv6 routing rules led me to turn if off outright rather than be precise
Fwiw, ipv6 is not insecure by default. Most firewalls, if not all, block incoming connections by default and Nat is not security.
That and ipv6 privacy addresses nullify privacy and security concerns.
