Ok I’ve been meaning to ask this in the Space community or the NoStupidQuestions community. I’ve seen this news circling around the past 2 weeks and have been watching videos of people talking about it.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I think the gist is that astronomers discovered with the JWST that some galaxies at the end of the observable universe appear to be younger than they are supposed to be. So it kinda blows a hole in the big bang expansion where objects farther away should be older. And that somehow ties in with the theory that our universe is inside a blackhole.
It’s fascinating but I don’t know what to do with that information other than just be fascinated. I think it was Neil deGrasse Tyson who said “So what does this new discovery matter to us? Nothing”, because us being in a blackhole doesn’t change anything in the grand universal scheme of things.
scytale@piefed.zipto The Signal messenger and protocol.@lemmy.ml•Signal stories shows what I want social media to beEnglish51·4 小时前I’ve never actually used it. Is it like instagram reels where you can put a photo/video and music together?
Edit: Just tried it. I don’t see the appeal to be honest. A messaging app to me is just that, an app to message people. If I wanted social media to post updates of whatever, I’d use pixelfed or mastodon. The author says the advantage of Signal is the granularity of the audience of your story. IIRC, facebook and the like allow you to restrict down to specific people you want. Obviously the corporate surveillance part is a no-brainer, but if you’re specifically talking about audience filtering, it’s no different.
IMO, instead of social media features, they should try to copy some Telegram features instead (sticker packs, automation, etc.) to make it more enticing to regular users. Make it a full feature chat app instead of a social media app like instagram.
scytale@piefed.zipto memes@lemmy.world•Yes Facebook is a dumpster fire, but this is always interesting if you are on there.English19·6 小时前Honestly, following gossip about people you’re actually connected with is still better than random accounts, pages, and posts you don’t follow being forced on your feed.
When I flew Emirates quite a while ago, they gave us stickers to put on your headrest if you want to be woken during meal/snack service. It was pretty cool because you can let go and sleep as much as you like without having to worry about missing food. This was an international flight though.
That and what the person you’re replying to about choosing your words carefully is insane. I was speaking with a rep from my insurance trying to figure out what I need to do for the free annual physical checkup stuff and they were telling me how I should speak to the doctor to avoid getting charged a consultation fee (i.e. don’t ask questions, avoid answering if they ask something about your current health, emphasize that you’re only there for your annual physicals, etc.). And if you don’t have a PCP, you probably have to pay for the visit either way as a “first-time patient” just to get the doctor’s orders for your labs. It’s bonkers navigating the system.
Looks like it was pulled from an Igorrr music video.
scytale@piefed.zipto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•And then reality smacks you in the faceEnglish7·8 小时前The photo initially looks like it was taken in the 80’s or 90’s. Then the more you look at it, you realize it was probably taken within the last 10 years.
scytale@piefed.zipto Fediverse@piefed.social•TIL about Fedi-Search, an open sourced frontend to easily search the Fediverse with a lot of mainstream enginesEnglish2·8 小时前Hopefully they add piefed soon, unless it’s also included when searching lemmy.
scytale@piefed.zipto Health - Resources and discussion for everything health-related@lemmy.world•Rare flesh-eating bacteria has already killed four beachgoers in Florida this yearEnglish2·8 小时前Well shit, I thought the <body part>-eating micro-organisms were only a risk in fresh water.

I know popping, but how does he get his chest to pop THAT much??
scytale@piefed.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are most religious people so easy to manipulate? (serious)English7·17 小时前Because the premise of religion involves having full faith in someone/something without question or evidence. So the more a person believes in it, the easier they are to manipulate, and it tends to have the same effect on other things. So if you are able to tickle that specific part of their brain and make them fully believe in something, you can have them do almost anything you want them to do.
scytale@piefed.zipto Anime@ani.social•Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [2025, Week 30]English9·17 小时前I’m halfway through Samurai Champloo. I like it. Cowboy Bebop vibes, and the soundtrack is amazing (Nujabes). It’s also nice to take a break from shows where the main characters are kids therefore having immature problems.
The Summer Hikaru Died - I like how they did the horror elements and the melancholic vibe. It’s kind of a slow burn so far so let’s see if it picks up in later episodes.
scytale@piefed.zipto Music Production@sh.itjust.works•How to get this effect in music?English4·19 小时前For the strxwberrymilk example, maybe you can just speed up a recorded voice and play it back and forth?
Simple, it ducks before it shoots, like in the picture. ez
Maybe they want to avoid liability if someone accidentally bites into it? I know they can remind the customer as many times as they want, but they probably just want to avoid the hassle of dealing with it in the first place.
Pick a server somewhere in southeast Asia. I don’t have issues with youtube with locations outside of western and first world countries.
That thing can make me eat way more rice than I should if I mix it in.
To be fair, it only works well if the increased pounds go to the right places.
