Summary
Taiwan detected six Chinese balloons, nine military aircraft, and six navy ships near its main island, calling it a form of “grey-zone” harassment.
The balloons, flying at high altitudes, mark one of the highest daily sightings recorded. China has increased military activity around Taiwan, pressuring it diplomatically and militarily.
This follows similar incidents, including record balloon sightings after Taiwan’s 2024 elections.
Beijing, which views Taiwan’s government as separatist, has escalated drills since President Lai Ching-te took office, raising regional tensions.
I’m surprised it took this long. The complete chaos in the US offers a perfect opportunity for China to make its move.
The US military forces in the Pacific are still a deterrent, for now. But… you’re right in that the chaos is making it difficult to say what the US Federal government under Trump will do if China invades Taiwan.
I no longer think that the US will be willing to join in the defense of Taiwan if it were attacked. The orders to the military just won’t be given to do so.
US will have to pull them back in order to take over Canada. It’s just a massive land grab at this point. Russia, China, United States.
