This has been happening for centuries though. Cao Cao mandated that first and last names needed to be at least 3 characters in all government forms. This move upset Lu Bu, which decided that war was the only way to settle the issue.
“200 soldiers were killed in the war and an additional 500000 people starved in the ensuing famine.”
You mean Cao Cao advised the Emperor to mandate, right?
Ha. iirc he did have some level of sovereignty. But for such stupid throwaway comment, I admit I didn’t actually remember much about what stage of his career overlapped with Lu Bu’s…
Stupid bit of code but to call it RACISM is a bit much
They clearly didn’t test this rule with a variety of cultures. They probably only tested it against white names.
I don’t think they tested it at all
Sometimes “testing” is just “hmm, yeah I can’t think of any problems this could cause”. I like to call this thought experiment testing. All features get thought experiment tested, because everyone has at least some level of critical thinking. The thought experiment tester who allowed this wasn’t thinking of Asian names.
I’m still wondering who came up with the idea in the first place. Why not allow last names with less than three characters?
They didn’t even think about it. You’re damned right they didn’t test it.
I don’t disagree with you, but I know someone with the last name Øe, and that’s very much a white name.
I tend to just mentally replace ‘white people’ with ‘white Americans’
Hanlon’s razor comes to mind. A lot of ignorance went into writing this website
Without knowing the person and how they post, it’s hard to say if they’re being serious or just joking
Hi, I actually happen to be that person in questions and I can assure you that everything I say online is either a lie or sarcasm
Racism doesn’t require malice. Something can still be racist in effect, without intention.
But also the Tweet is probably tongue-in-cheek.
I really like this blog post and always read it.
But am always sad, that he didn’t actually include examples yet.
Nor is there a comment section, as he references, for us to view.
Well, fuck Yu I guess.
Unless this is a governmental form, why would you give out your real name anyway?
Most instances have no need to know your actual name and only do so to be able to send you unwanted promotions.
Why do you think it’s real?
Yu shitting me?
Also not particularly great if your last name is null
I wonder if any non print characters would help
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-printing_character_in_word_processors
I imagine that any decent input checking library mark these as suspicious and block it.
He could try HughButActuallyYuFU
Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
More like incompetence. Developers always put in the weirdest dumb requirements on forms.
Yea nobody will believe your first name with that kinda last name. Lol
