Hell didn’t they also try to blame the Matrix simply because the shooters were wearing trench coats? meanwhile the film came out like what? one or two weeks before the shootings?

I’m old enough to remember “Mortal Monday” with the release of the first Mortal Kombat on consoles and everyone was CONVINCED that it would result in kids ripping the spines and hearts out of peoples bodies.

university/college campus buildings are notoriously easy to get into. Doors unlocked pretty much 24 hours, Libraries open late, etc. I mean hell I’d still go to my University library and student lounge areas well after I graduated late at night to do work because the wifi was excellent and…no one bothered you. One night I even passed out and fell asleep in the lounge and no one woke me up. Plus Campus Police are like a middle ground between security guards and actual cops.

So a dude rolling in to one of the buildings from like 200+ yards away to set up a shot with a rifle doesn’t surprise me at all. It was a pretty good shot too if you saw the video so they had time. Probably had a decent amount of time to slip out also.

And the conspiracy theories are are already flowing. Apparently Kirk was convinced Israel was going to assassinate him so he had more security and wore body armor during public appearances recently. Another is that he pissed off the Nazi’s to the point they wanted him gone. Another is that it was a distraction op.

can’t speak for OP but for me, surprisingly, youtube shorts. Once that damn thing gets your algo figured out for you suddenly you can start finding bands that are in your wheelhouse. Start by looking for shorts on your current favourite bands and eventually new stuff will start popping up that should be similar to your taste.

Honestly for all the crap that’s on youtube, shorts has been one of if not the best tool for me to find new music/bands. Once I find something I like then it’s off to SoulSeek/Nicotine+ to add it to my server.

the other night a friend of mine wanted to switch to Linux and was dead set on using Pop!_OS after reading about COSMIC and seeing some images of it on unixporn. He even asked an LLM about the best distros for his rig and what he liked to do and the answer was Pop!_OS. So he asked me to help him install it. I suggested other distros but no, dead set on using pop.

Live boot USB and the entire time during the install it’s complaining about not being able to connect to the internet while being connected to the internet. After the install, it locks up immediately on logging into the OS. try again, ok not locking up now. start doing some apt installs/updates - it crashes. Finally get it to a stable state and try installing steam and a game to test out the nvidia stuff that the LLM claimed Pop was fantastic for. Game crashes. system locks up again.

I eventually say “dude, I got cachyos on this usb too…wanna try that instead?” fine, install CachyOS (which gives you the option to install COSMIC during the install) everything just works. no more crashes, everything is smooth, his games work flawlessly. COSMIC crashes. just the DE. switch him to KDE and that was that. no more issues.

I’m honestly a bit worried about System76. They put all their focus on COSMIC and it feels like with each alpha release it progressively gets worse. I mean during the early Alphas I was seriously considering daily driving it but with each alpha release it just “felt off” and a bit slower/worse with more features added (and there aren’t many). the OS has noticeably gotten worse because it hasn’t been worked on. Even the distrowatch reviews for it have gotten worse.

But hey if you want GNOME with a tiling toggle then have at it. It’s just weird that its taken them this long for something that doesn’t have much to it and it’s not very good.

That’s where I’m making my money. Went from a freelance/consultant dev to pretty much a digital janitor for companies. it IS the next big industry.

Get good at code reviewing - hell really you don’t even need to be that good at it all you need to do is know the typical Claude Code comments and search for a lot of “#TODO’s”

I make more money doing this now than I did just being a developer. If you’re looking for work I HIGHLY suggest you deal with the crap on Linkedin and start advertising yourself as an expert code reviewer with a specialty in diagnosing “AI generated builds”. Then wait for the desperate companies to start trickling in.

Vibe coders this past year have made me a lot of money. I’ve pretty much transitioned from being a freelance dev to a digital janitor as it makes me more money. Just code reviewing their slop. It’s extremely easy too, much easier than reviewing code of an actual dev.

I do volunteer work for homeless outreaches and yeah I’m totally sure the women who are homeless right now due to escaping domestic abuse it was totally an “individual choice” to get their faces beat in on a daily basis. The kids who are homeless because their parents abandoned them for being LGBTQ+ - totally an individual choice on their part. The military vets who are homeless because their country ditched to the curb, yup that’s an individual choice because they decided to serve their country and then their country said “get lost”. The ones who end up on the streets because they couldn’t get treatment or help for their mental illness. Why that was an individual choice to go mentally ill in the first place! The Elderly who can no longer afford to pay the constantly increasing rents on whatever fixed income they have, totally an individual choice to not some how make more money at the age of 80+.

yes and the reason for that was the massive security risks to users systems that Deepin refused to resolve. ALSO their community packager utilized workarounds to bypass the RPM packaging mechanisms to install “restricted” assets.

yeah, don’t use this distro AT ALL. I’d trust RedStarOS over this and friggin RedStarOS is proven to modify your files.

you can easily get the entire SNES and Genesis library roms which alone will give you enough. Those alone will give you some awesome RPGs like Chrono Trigger, Secrets of, Final Fantasy, Phantasy Star, etc.

Descent: Freespace especially. At the time that thing was awesome and so easy to mod. I remember someone was making a fantastic Babylon 5 mod for it that I dont’ think ever saw the light of day.

shit all you have to do is try to update/upgrade the thing and it’s like rolling the dice if it’ll bork your system or not so they’ve done an excellent job in people hating them for that one reason.

without fail whenever they roll out an update you’ll see threads on mastodon or bluesky with people saying “welp, my Ubuntu is fucked” after an update.
