  • I had to call my representatives office to get expedited services for my Niece and Sister in-law to attend my wedding because Mom was born in Asia, Niece was born in Canada, and Dad was born in the States.

When people say things like “I just want them to do it legally” the part they dont understand is that there is essentially no legal path way for most people, and now were arresting and deporting the ones who are following the law which will just encourage people not to.

So i know its a big IF but I really hope most of these lawyers do the right thing and focus on the law, and precedent.

  • Short answer is taxes.

    https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/limited-liability-company-llc

Lots of small businesses are LLC’s which will run all of the companies income and expenses through the owners personal taxes. That means that they see the effective tax rate for business income, personal income, payroll, and possible exise taxes as an expense.

A normal worker or even contract worker on a 1099 generally does not see more than their own income taxes and when 1099 employer paid taxes. That means they see their effective tax rate as probably more reasonable in the 35%ish range.

An owner however will see all of these taxes added up and probably see something like 50% even though if they were a regular employee it would be lower to them as an individual. They probably still end up making more money because 50% on 1,000,000 is more 35% on 100,000. It still wont feel that way.

In addition to the taxes conversation they may also be employers which will put them in an adversarial relationship with the people working for them no matter how awesome they are. As an employer they are trying to keep costs as low as possible, and get the most work out of the people working for them as possible because the margin on labor is often the largest profit center in most jobs. The margin on a product may be small, but having a sales person, or staff that can constantly sell that product and increase quantity will be a multiplier in effective margin.

So just think about the differences between the two main types of parties, one generally represents ownership and prioritizes tax breaks, and weakened regulation. The other generally represents the workers and wants higher taxes on profit and more protections.

Given these generalities you can start to see why most small business owners would lean conservative.
