Yeah it seems obvious to me now to choose the busiest server first but when I first came here, the join page was taking forever to load anything lol. So at that point the obvious (to me) choice was the small server advertised as for reducing load.

I’ll ask it there (or here) a bit later then, if you think it seems like a good idea. Currently about halfway through a j and a cup of coffee, just scrolling and throwing 2 cents in here and there.

My experience getting started here was a rollercoaster for sure. I think that one thing that would improve the experience immensely is if there were a way to have one profile no matter which instance you sign up on. I’m on my 3rd instance right now and the first 2 were both within my first 2 days of trying this place out.

It’s like if you want one permanent profile, you have to first research the politics of an instance, and its politics with other instances, and hang around long enough to check out the users and see if your first impression was true etc. etc. And just kiss your old profile and history good bye if the politics change and you need to move homes.

I’m too new to be making these kinds of suggestions and I’m far from the moderator type myself but multiple times throughout this week, I’ve been thinking that it would be pretty cool if there was an AskBlåhaj. Or even just general Ask Lemmy based here, that could be asking for unwanted attention from shitty people on other instances though.

Not even 24 hours after seeing this post, I’ve seen someone else getting the snark and a non answer for a simple question. And also a Blåhaj user.

As much of a public bathroom as it could be, AskReddit was pretty fun for ‘silly’ questions and general chatting. And a nice place for new users to hang around and gain karma and confidence. But with the gatekeeper neckbeardy types around, maybe what it needs on Lemmy is to be in an instance with rules that promote friendliness and good vibes.

Just an idea to throw out there anyway.

My heart goes out to all the good people that are going to suffer too, who have to share a country with people that threw them under the bus and sold them out for cheaper eggs that we all knew weren’t going to happen.

Edit: it would be nice if you could repurpose deleted comments when you change your mind about replying, seeing as that ‘deleted by creator’ now hangs around forever anyway.

This is what it took to be concerned?

Something I’ve seen pointed out about Lemmy and I’m starting to notice a little bit occasionally, is that people love ‘answering’ questions by not really answering and grandstanding a little bit. Someone asks “is there a gen z community?” and the responses they get are things like “who cares about these generation labels?” and no answers to the question.

Here you ask why there’s a large amount of downvotes on a particular instance, and not what people’s personal philosophy regarding downvotes is, and yet the top answer is someone that came here especially to tell you that they don’t care and no one cares.

And these guys are gonna complain about people going to places like Bluesky instead of joining the fediverse. AskReddit was basically the gateway to Reddit for new users.

To try and guess at an answer, even though I’m new here and haven’t even seen downvotes for the last few days. I think that people are trying to keep a certain political atmosphere and not let trolls / right wingers / people who are “just asking questions” take over. So votes go hard in that direction. And also I think there’s probably a lot more of the types around here that’ll have a ‘discussion’ while downvoting every response they get from you, more than on Reddit. Just going by the sneering that comes with how some harmless questions are answered.

Yeah but what about the price of eggs?

I want something between ‘feature phones’ and smartphones. A little bit like what Nokia had to offer with Symbian and Maemo but more modern. If you want a rectangle of glass that requires wireless proprietary everything and replacing every time the battery starts packing up, more power to you, I’m a fan of choice and options.

But I want to be able to buy a music phone with great speakers and toys like FM transmitters thrown in. Or a gaming phone with a d-pad, a, b, x, y and shoulder buttons. But like, with Firefox instead of Opera Mini. And social media apps and shit.

No need to apologize, I’ve been getting worse as of late.

Not gonna judge because I’ve probably been somewhere similar before. I am not exactly who I was yesterday either. I hope that you make it through the other side of whatever is hurting you and start to feel pain free again.

I hope I’m reading this wrong and I truly apologize if I am but I’m getting pretty strong ‘asshole’ vibes here, much stronger than I would from anyone using the word “normie”, personally.

But either way, it’s actually good to know when words I previously felt were overall harmless can cause this kind of response. I may not be from the USA, or have come from a background where it’s such a charged word, but I’m on a platform that’s likely mostly American (based on the news and politics that come through ‘All’), so I will refrain from using it unless I find it absolutely necessary.

Which should be fairly easy to do, considering that I barely ever use it anyway and just thought that this would be an amusing conversation.

You guys are lucky to have AOC. I’m a non-American that only knows her from memes and screenshots like this but I’m a fan. Especially compared to all the other dead fish.

I’m too new here to be making these kinds of assumptions but whenever I see someone complaining about Ada and team, I’m thinking these might be ‘free speech’ people that want the right to enter every club without paying the admission, adhering to the dress code and full reign to insult the regulars, staff and owner. Real life doesn’t work that way so why should social media?

So far I’m more than happy and impressed with the Blåhaj instance. And even if I move to another instance or mbin or something, I’m still happy to respect the Blåhaj way when I’m in that house.

This federation thing gives me a different outlook on this kind of thing compared to Reddit. When you say “admin” here, you’re not talking about some rich incel, you’re talking about people putting their time and effort into providing spaces for people to gather and form communities. Probably for little reward.

Yeah that’s been one of the funniest parts to watch. It’s been moderators versus admins but not users versus admins. Personally I think it’s a pretty simple concept that the instance rules come first, then the community rules. I’m not surprised by anything I’m seeing or hearing on the admin side because I think it’s pretty clear what to expect when you enter the place and read the sidebar.

Yeah honestly it’s not that serious for me. Personally I’ve never even visited the front page of 4chan. It’s a word that’s been around since long before social media too, as far as I know. One other place I’ve seen it used is autism communities when someone is describing their feelings about fitting in, or not.

I feel like 4chan is a US-centric thing. And a niche one at that. So it’s a very niche US-centric thing to assume about random strangers on the world wide web. For a word that a lot of people probably use differently.

Holy shit I had no idea. If these guys hadn’t all kept their mouths shut, I might’ve been considering jumping ship earlier myself. There was brief panic after Scott was relieved of his duties but basically everyone on the inside was like “settle down everyone, nothing to see here”, so it seemed all good.

Yeah this was kind of a similar story with Reddit at one point too. When I first looked into Reddit, it was because I had seen it included with the ‘share’ buttons on various websites and wanted to see what it was. I don’t think it was as small as Lemmy when I joined but it was definitely never on the same plateau as Facebook and Twitter.

Well, I can now say that I’ve been around to witness my first big users versus moderators versus admins battle royale on Lemmy. And within my first week here! It’s been fairly entertaining and also feels like I should have an achievement badge on my profile now. Just need the next achievement of being a participant in one of these matches.
