Comes out to 13.39 per 100k pop per year, lower than Mississippi 20.7, Louisiana 19.8, Alabama 14.9, or New Mexico 14.5.

Edit: Googling suggests a rate of 25 in 2022 for Mexico, so that total must be low.

New Mexico isn’t that bad, 290 out of 2 million people, especially since its a drug corridor it’s pretty good

        Also in Mexico:

According to the search results, at least 37 Mexican candidates were assassinated during the 2024 election season, surpassing the previous record of 36 killings during the 2021 midterm elections. The security consultancy Integralia documented 828 non-lethal attacks on candidates as well.

So Trump becoming a criminal is actually not even close to how long and deep the barrel gets.

It makes winning be such a freeing feeling of not being actually being dead. Heck I would be ecstatic too if it was me. But also worried about when it might happen. I hope it doesn’t end bad. I hope this changes Mexico so I can visit it one day in the far far future before I croak.

Pretty sure politicians don’t like high murder rates, especially high murder rates for politicians themselves.

        Can’t find a source though

As bleak as it is, given the high amount of other political opponents that died, the fact that she didn’t is likely an indication of how nice she plays with the people doing the murdering. I’m hopeful that she’s just good at dodging assassins, though!

It’s not bleak, it’s naive to assume that there has been no communication or back room deals between the politicians and the cartels.

She is not an independent candidate, she did not come to power via a coup. She is a veteran politician who played by the rules established before her and emerged the victor of a blatantly crooked game. People simply do not want to accept it because she is a woman.

I mean, the bleak thing is that the world works through people making deals with murderers to not be murdered, instead allowing other people to be murdered. I don’t give a shit about her gender, I just want a story about a good person winning in spite of corruption, not a bad person winning because of it.

I’m sure the political elite have zero ties to the cartels that have ravaged Mexico for decades and never assist them in their endeavors. /s

Many of you don’t really know Mexican politics but not only was she elected as president, the party she is from got the majority of seats on the Senate. They now control most of the government, which is basically a return to the age of a single dominant party in Mexican politics. But honestly it’s the fault of the opposition for either not presenting ANYTHING at all on how they’ll manage the affairs of the country or having absolute dog shit proposals (which in my opinion EVERYONE had dog shit proposals. We were forced to choose from a selection of dog shit, cow shit and horse shit),I was so conflicted about who to vote for I just left the ballot blank for presidency and voted on the local and Senate ballots.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Claudia Sheinbaum has made history as the first woman elected president of Mexico, according to projections from the nation’s official quick count.

Sheinbaum has promised to keep in place welfare policies and social programs that have helped Morena retain a solid approval rating from voters.

When it comes to combating the country’s high levels of violence, Sheinbaum has said she plans on continuing her predecessor’s “hugs, not bullets” policy of not directly taking on criminal organizations that have gained control over large parts of Mexico as they fight for territory to traffic drugs into the U.S., make money from migrant smuggling and extort residents to fuel their illicit enterprise.

López Obrador’s policy has not significantly helped reduce killings over the past six years, as Mexican government data shows that at least 102,400 homicides have been reported in that period.

But the data also shows that the strategy of López Obrador’s predecessors — pursuing drug lords in an all-out war — did not improve safety either.

As a member of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Sheinbaum is among the scientists who shared a 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their report.

The original article contains 601 words, the summary contains 187 words. Saved 69%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
