Pop!_OS is going to stand out with this new desktop environment. System76 is clearly giving it enough attention to make it as good or better than other Linux desktop environments.
I’d recommend everyone to try out
cosmic-store
(withcosmic-icons
) when they get a chance. Whether you use COSMIC or not, it’s fully functional with any desktop environment. It’s packaged by default in Pop!_OS 22.04, available in Fedora 40 via ryanabx/cosmic-epoch, and the AUR.Is it mature enough to replace the Pop!_Shop or should we keep a copy of that around?
That’s up to you. If you need it, you can always reinstall it.
Gave it a shot. Definitely a performance increase over Pop!_Shop (and it doesn’t drive my Thelio’s CPU cooler nearly as hard). I do miss the colorful greeter on the shop with the Pop!_OS branding though. Are there plans to integrate something similar into the COSMIC store, or is its UI largely complete at this point?
The design is finished for Alpha 1, but there is likely to be future design work once designs are revisited for alpha 2 or the beta.
Will ypu change from Ubuntu to Fedora?
No
I’ve been using COSMIC for a while now without problems, and the store is great. Easy to theme and the apps are pretty good. I haven’t checked it lately, but I hope the greeter improves soon.
Great work. Some of these fixes read like dwarf fortress bugs!
