It’s been a while since I was into unlocking and ROMing my devices, but I’ve got the itch again.

XDA used to be a good place, but… I hope I’m out of there loop or something, because it’s almost a ghost town compared to years ago.

I’ve got us carrier unlocked devices; OnePlus N10 and N20, Moto G7Power.

Definitely not as big as it used to be. Lineage, Graphene, and Pixel Experience are just about the only players left. Graphene doesn’t officially support anything other than pixels actively supported by Google though.

GSI are dominant now, device specific Roms are rare these days.

        “Generic system images”

Since device manufacturers don’t support their hardware, Google has tried adding another layer of abstraction between hardware and the Android UI

      Really?

I haven’t seen any third party GSIs. What have you seen (that I clearly lack the google-fu to find, lol)?

Even if your device is not listed, it is still supported. Every phone launched with Android 8 or greater support project treble. Thus, it also supports gsi.

I’ve not been able to get the built in gsi loader to ever work, not even with an app.

From what I understand, 1+ is not doing something the expected way… Idk.

I still need to find TWRP and to backup stock partitions first.

                1. DSU works properly for Android 12 or greater.
                2. If fastboot works you don’t need twrp.

DSU, do you have a OnePlus N10 or N20? It does not work. If it works on your OnePlus, please provide the extra/special steps you took other than tapping the app and selecting a gsi, then rebooting. Nothing happens on boot. No gsi. Just boots normally.

Last time I checked GSI’s kinda sucked and had worse performance than native ROMs, is that still true? (Keep in mind this was 3 or 4 years ago)

No, it’s not at least in my case. Actually GSI Lineage is a little bit faster due to less bloat than stock. But performance could be different for different devices.

Note: I experienced some bugs but all of them were easy to fix.

Craze of custom rom is almost over now due to manufacturers bullshit

Wasn’t a craze, it was an attempt to make the devices usable in most cases.

Raises hand in cheap but very usable hardware that only gets one major update

Many of them are on Telegram. Try looking for the groups by device name.

I have two Xiaomi devices and use custom roms for both of them. While there are pages for them in the XDA forums, most of the new updates and developments of custom roms and kernels, at least for Xiaomi devices, happens within telegram groups.

You could just try searching for ROMs and going to their git page or website and get a guide on how to install specific ROM. I recommend Lineage OS since it’s the one I used for two~three years and because it doesn’t come with Google shenanigans

Yeah, if I had a Pixel or something, sure.

But I haven’t found anything for my OnePlus N10…

To me it seems to be a bit more active than it used to be. Even my unpopular ultra budget Redmi from 4 years ago got a couple of A14 roms this year.
