Which perverts come up with this sort of insanity? Why is there no checks and balances against the said perversion?
As appalling as this is, it’s what was predicted if these bans came into force. Horrible that people are losing such basic autonomy.
What I’m shocked by today is the amount of rape happening in America. If these numbers are accurate then that’s really alarming
It’s astonishingly common. Every single partner I’ve had outside of my highschool sweetheart had been sexually assaulted in some manner.
It’s very hard to prove and prosecute, so often women have little recourse. I subscribe to the baseball bat style of justice personally.
Every single partner I’ve had as well, which is only one, but it happened twice on separate occasions (once outside the US though)…
To be clear: Those pregnancies would have happened before abortion bans, too. It’s just more visible now.
To further clarify: These figures are entirely based on estimates. They’re not “more visible” because of the abortion bans (the statistics used to make the estimates are based on pre-ban crime figures and an assumption about the percentage of rapes that result in pregnancy).
I’m not saying this to criticise the study, but it’s important to understand what the numbers represent.
I wish this to be the self destruction the stupid conservatism.

The finding, published this week in JAMA Internal Medicine, is a stark look at the effects of such bans on reproductive health care.
The study did not assess how many of the estimated 64,565 pregnancies resulted in births, but it makes clear that tens of thousands of pregnant rape survivors, including children, were forced to turn to illegal procedures, self-managed abortions, or burdensome travel to states where abortion is legal—cost-prohibitive to many—as an alternative to carrying a rape-related pregnancy to term.
The states with those exceptions apply stringent time limits on the pregnancy and require victims to report their rapes to law enforcement, which likely disqualifies most.
In an editor’s note accompanying the study, a trio of JAMA Internal Medicine editors—who are also medical researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, Harvard, and NYC Health and Hospitals—note the findings “demonstrate the scope of the problem,” as the number of rape-related pregnancies is “exponentially larger” than the number of legal abortions in those states.
Rather we see access to safe abortions as a necessary part of reproductive health services to protect the physical and mental well-being of patients.
Texas, the abortion-ban state with the largest population, had an estimated 26,313 (41 percent) of all rape-related pregnancies under its ban, which was enacted for 16 months during the study time frame.

Part of me wonders; was this their plan all along? Everyone knows that people are having fewer kids and there’s a real problem that the old will outnumber the young and we won’t be able to support the elderly population. So, is the GOP’s plan to just force people to have kids against their will as a way to mitigate that?
I don’t believe conservative leaders have plans on the society. They’re just morons taking turns to enrich themselves.
If you’re talking about politicians then I’d agree with you. If you’re talking about their wealthy donors like the Koche Brothers, Heritage Foundation, etc, they absolutely do. I would not say it’s the above person’s guess about forcing more births due to lowering birth rates, but they definitely have societal goals in mind
It’s dangerous to underestimate them. Republican voters are almost universally uninformed at best and absolutely debilitatingly stupid at worst.
Republican politicians-especially their “leadership”-know what they’re doing, know the impact, and don’t care.
Don’t give them so much credit. The GOP just see what the populus is riled up about, and promise them that to win votes. Sometimes they will join in generating misinformation, soweing division, pushing controversial narratives, etc but it is always for the sake of winning more votes in the short-term. They don’t think ahead, they are very simple.

Political history, especially in the house of representatives, paints a vivid picture of long term Republican thinking. Their ability to canvas and take over local government as well as mobilize their voting based is absolutely unrivaled by any other political party in the US. Think tanks from the right have been publishing political playbooks for decades which outline their thinking and planning on both short and long term issues and this shouldn’t be dismissed as not thinking ahead.
I won’t give the mouthpeices much credit. But be careful in underestimating them. Self-delusion is deep and complex, and that’s frightening enoguh. Even more frightening though, is that if you go searching deep enough in conservative donors networks, conservativeism always winds it’s way back to members of the 1% seeking unchecked power.
Conservative and religious institutional donors do think ahead, and they are a special breed of cruel, ruthless, and smart. Yes, most of the conservative bloc is dickwaving while they push the “give money now” button of reaction hate politics. It’s pretty obvious that on the surface there’s nothing particularly thoughtful going on there.
But the underlying strategy is as fascinating as frightening. There is a LOT of effort that goes in behind the scenes to figure out how to manipulate literally every aspect of people in society. These big donors typically have highly lucratice connections, often very direct ones, to big corps. Some of the most insidious manipulation that goes on in our society today is the result of capitalist businesses finding ways to perpetually squeeze us harder for a dollar. It’s no coincidence when we see the same tactics being used in politics.
So yeah. I don’t entirely disagree with you but progressives consistently get our asses handed to us when we underestimate anything.
