It’s a fairly safe bet that on any given day, at least a good dozen IT departments are trying to convince their bosses and/or users about the vital importance of backups. Unfortunately, it seems that the argument was lost in the South Korean government, as the institution has completely lost the sizable amount of 858 terabytes of data, with 0 bytes of backups.

They actually did have backups—in the same building… apparently, they didn’t know about 3-2-1. Gods…

Backups are vital. But being able to restore backups is as well.

    858 terabytes

Bright side: Unbackuped Korea in the future will not only learn how to back-up, but probably will also decrease the amount of data it logs about citizens. Double-win!

Governments are dumb … but they aren’t that dumb

I’m sure some of that data was deliberately allowed to be deleted permanently for political reasons

I live in a part of Canada known for its historic mining and forestry culture. We had lots of historic buildings here that were all lost to unfortunate fires. If you go back on the history books, many of those fires were deliberately set for all kinds of reasons … but many of them were just plain insurance / business scams for bankrupt mining companies wanting to get their money back … or to hide evidence of financial wrongdoing.

Data is powerful and like our modern gold … it can either be used to build a business … take down another business … or in the wrong hands, used as evidence or blackmail against us

Hanlon’s razor, “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”

And also Occam’s razor, for this to be done on purpose would require a vast plot including hundreds of people doing it for years.

I think the political developments of the past decade or so have comprehensively proven that Hanlon’s razor is total bullshit.

I don’t see how that fits. The events of the past decade can’t be adequately explained by stupidity alone

Not sure about that. In principle, it only takes one crazy idiot with a molotov cocktail to get rid of your datacenter, as long as the fire prevention systems are shit off.

So let’s say, it takes two people

I meant the entire country purposely not having any backups for years is what would take a ton of people acting conspiratorially

I don’t think you understand how inept government or law enforcement is… demonstrably… with centuries of evidence…

Insurance fraud and corruption ARE the simplest explanation for a lot of these kinds of “accidents”.

Which is more likely? Many people failing to do their jobs, or a small corrupt few going, “whoopsie!”?

If they’re that inept then they wouldn’t have been able to pull off this vast plot that includes hundreds of people doing it over many years
