Final Fantasy 7 - I like the turn-based battle, I like the original story and the pacing. The only thing better with the remake is the graphics.
Dragon Quest 3 - I like how the world is “smaller” in the OG. I also prefer the 16-bit pixelart more than the HD-2D style. Also the auto-battle breaks the gameplay in the remake.
Super Mario Bros 3 - the original NES art style looks unique, I prefer it over the newer graphics in Super Mario All Star.
I had the FF7 remake in my cart for full price until I saw it wasn’t turn-based. The original was a big game for me as a kid and I’ve never replayed it mostly due to the graphics not holding up
It’s not a bad game, you should give it a try.
You can play the PC version with graphical mods. It looks really nice with high resolution, 60 FPS, and wide screen support.
Oh yeah? I’ll have to look into that then, thanks!
The upcoming deus ex remastered is bound to be shite, thanks to aspyr.
Funnily enough deus ex human revolution director’s cut is also worse than the original HR, they added a story dlc in the middle of the game stripping you out of your progression and items, not to mention it ruins the pacing horribly. Yellow filter was also removed in directors cut but can be added and fixed through a mod
Apart from the whole losing your gear and powers bit I thought the integrated DLC worked fairly well in HR? Granted, I never played the original version. But overall I felt like the DLC was the best part of the game.
The DLC itself is fine with me if it would’ve been separate as it was before DC re-release. Or at least if they provided an option in the menu. But they didn’t, sadly
Warcraft 3. They didn’t even try.
I feel like one of the most famous examples of this is the Silent Hill HD Collection where they removed the fog and changed voices.
Does Battlefront 2 count? Kind of not sure it counts as a remake, but it loses a lot of the charm of the original for the remaster. Tech and some aspects of gameplay got greatly improved, but the environments don’t feel as good.
I haven’t touched them but the remasters of the STALKER games scrubbing everything russian from the game including “cheeki breeki” has to be a candidate. A huge point of the games and their charm was that they were anchored in real life locations.
Just play the originals.
What, they even got rid of the cheeki breeki dialog? That sucks.
It’s not technically a remake/remaster, but Transport Fever is essentially a remake of Transport Tycoon (open-sourced as OpenTTD).
Transport Fever is a decent game but it peaked with Transport Tycoon. The isometric map simplifies things enough where the camera doesn’t get in your way. It’s way easier to lay railroad tracks and whatnot in Transport Tycoon as well.
Duck Tales
Woo-ooo!
