I've got until mid-January at the latest to find a new place to live and it's fucking torture.

1750 for a damn basement and the landleech just chickened out because I asked for proof that the place was actually legal cuz I can't get tenant's insurance + the landlord tenant board won't help you in the event of some kind of dispute + a failed bylaw inspection could evict me. He replied saying the place was "not right for me". So I'm calling bylaw inspection on his ass to prevent other desperate fools like me from accidentally illegally/informally renting. And I just got ghosted by the company that was supposed to show me my other 2 options.

I fr don't know what I'm gonna do and I feel like I've fallen out of a tree and am hitting every branch on the way down, and then I have to get up and go to work and do my very best not to stress-cry.

    Some unsolicited advice:

    • Check out co-op waiting lists, many cities will have interactive maps with links. “Rent” is lower, people are nicer, and the places are actually cared for if you manage to get in.

    • Photoshopped bank statement makes for a great alternative for a proof of income.

    • Ask your friends/comrades to ask their friends if anyone is renting out/looking for a roommate. Works especially well if you can go through their parents’ network.

    • On your first day walk around with the landlord and film the place, it will keep your deposit much safer.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely keep all this in mind. The affordable housing waitlist that I just got on is 7 years long. X(
