Smith said permanent residents and non-citizens living in Alberta will have no marker displayed on their card.

Yeah because law enforcement wont abuse that.

Albertans will need to provide proof of citizenship or immigration status when applying for or renewing a driver’s licence, according to the province.

Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Dale Nally said the federal government was consulted on the change.

“Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction” sounds kinda maple maga

Driver’s licences incorporating Alberta health-care card information will roll out at the same time, Smith said.

“This will also provide additional security around health-care numbers,” Smith said.

Smith said there are over 530,000 more health-care numbers than there are people living in Alberta.

Yeah if you are having difficulties with health-care numbers and the population that is an issue, but you wanna bet that the 530 000 number is in relation to people who do not have a license? Here in Saskatchewan we get free stickers to put on our health cards when they are up for renewal, I am willing to bet that you will have to renew your license to keep your health card up to date.

It’s sad that she KNOWS she can be so transparently evil and get away with it.

This is of course nothing more than a new way to demonize immigrants, aka “damn foriners takin’ our jobs!”

The healthcare number is the lube to ease it in.

The 530k number is a complete lie. She’s already been called out on it, and it doesn’t matter.

She should honestly have a handlebar moustache to twirl, except that of course it would make her a tranny.

As a person who is Trans myself I understand how you thinking her using the car part slang is cool but I personally really dislike it. Your other points are well taken though.

    This is an old conservative trick: 1) defund public services 2) divert blame for the negative results on an ‘enemy class’ of citizen who are abusing and breaking public services 3) distract with a witch-hunt for these enemies;

In the 80s the enemies were “welfare queens”, now they’re immigrants.

Hmmm creating rhetoric against an identifiable underclass, then requiring the class to carry identification that labels them as a member of the undesirable underclass… Where have I seen that before?!?

So the Minister for Red tape reduction is adding more steps to the licensing process?

That’s ok, the same minister in Ontario is a part of the biggest cabinet in history.

I almost guarantee that those 530,000 people with numbers just moved out of province and never bothered to tell the AB government because why would they?

Plenty of them here in BC.

Do you need to tell them? I never did. I just assumed there’s some sort of government system to track which citizens are residents in each province, if nothing else to keep people from “double dipping” in two provinces’ healthcare systems.

Then again, BC charges health premiums to seniors, right? So maybe keeping an AB health card is a way seniors might try to dodge that, I guess? (I’m just here on vacation, really!)

It’s your taxes. Basically no one knows where you are until the end of the year, and even that could end up being out of date. Kinda ridiculous, especially as you’re also able to register to vote and have that moved around.

It would make far too much sense to have a better, federal level setup for all of these things with a simple online portal. A driver’s license should work everywhere in the country, as should a healthcard, but for some reason we love having a country that is just a loose collection of smaller countries that are all part of the same club.

You’re supposed to get a health card for whatever province you are a resident of.

      That’s always been the case.

Like, I hate these changes as an Albertan with a PR wife.

But to answer the specific question of “why would they?”, because that’s technically been the rule since as long as we’ve had universal healthcare with the administration of which delegated to the provinces.

Just give us a fucking plastic Alberta health card instead of this stupid paper tear out shit. But I gotta that would make too much sense.

My healthcare card is long gone, I just give my address if I go in and they look it up. Never had an issue.

Nah. You need to laminate it yourself, which is technically not allowed for some reason, apparently, but everyone does it anyway.

While I would have the marker I’ll start showing my PAL instead of drivers license then. It’s an official photo ID as well.
