Back in the '80s he had a huge problem getting grants funded under Reagan, who cut a bunch of this shit too. I still remember the takeaway at the dinner table, “This is going to set the research back 20 years.” as he was stressing about how he was going to fund this lab.

They cut the good shit government does and fund the bad shit like ICE and foreign escapades.
