I’m not a watcher of the show beyond the first couple of episodes. How far had the show progressed in the story? What book’s worth of story from the series did they last film?

The show diverged a lot from the books, but it roughly covered the first four books. By many, the fourth book is considered where the series really finds its way and crafts an identity of its own, so they cancelled it just as the story was getting into the best parts.

That being said, the fourth book is also widely considered one of, if not the, best book of the entire series, and despite the third season being for the most part based on it, the show’s ratings were getting lower and lower, so the cancellation made sense.

I have read some good reviews of the last season, but I haven’t watched it to confirm them. I was left so disappointed by the first season that I never watched anything past that. I could’ve lived with the (pretty much mandatory, considering the books’ size) cuts for pacing, and I could’ve been fine with some of the original stuff they threw in, but the entire show just felt cheap. Like, '90s Young Hercules cheap. And not in a good way.

I hadn’t been following the critical reception or the viewer ratings, so I appreciate you sharing this with me and I agree it the story gets much worse before the Sanderson stuff brings it to a great ending.

I had the exact same reaction! I watched first 2 or 3 episodes and was turned off by it thinking I might come back to it when it gets complete if folks reporting it improving.

They got 3 seasons. I forget what happens when in the books, but I think it’s broadly inspired by the first 3 books. But they had started diverging pretty substantially.
