The Oatmeal
I was told this, because I’m a problem solver. So I stopped solving problems. Now my life is so much simpler and I only solve my problems.
it’s great. fuck everyone else.
I completely relate. I think that’s just part of maturing in general. I’d modify that a bit though. “Fuck everyone else” is too dismissive. You’ve got to take others into account. If you don’t, you are absolutely part of the problem
Which problem would that be, exactly? Life just seems like an endless series of responsibilities towards others, but the instant you need the slightest thing back, it’s “that’s not the way it works”, “but actually that’s not our job”, etc
Why should I take others into account? No one ever took me into their account, except to solve their problems.
Because you’re a social animal who needs human contact and compassion to thrive. As disagreeable as that may sound it’s a big part of staying healthy. I get that it’s hard though.
Strange. When I needed social contact and the same humanity afforded murderers in jail, all I got was “you’re weird, go away”. So I did. Now don’t complain if I’m far away.
If I’m such a social animal, where were these people when I was young? Where was the compassion? Nowhere.
Ah but the moment I was useful to fix someone’s problems, all of a sudden everyone remembers my name and my phone number.
I get that you’ve given up. I’m just saying you’re worse off for it. I’m sorry you’ve had such terrible experiences.
You’ve heard the adage “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”? In social situations, the greasy wheel gets more grease, and the squeaky wheel gets replaced and thrown away.
damn i forgot the oatmeal existed
https://mastodon.social/@oatmeal You could even follow him on Mastodon
Fun fact: that’s how I linked to his account first but then I remembered you cannot follow people directly on Lemmy anyway
He’s kind of off the deep end, ever since he started peddling NFC’s.
Near field chargers are pretty neat.
You mean NFTs?
I missed this and a quick search came up empty.
Gotta link?
He made a show for Netflix last year. https://imdb.com/title/tt19734104
I don’t want to be the turd in the punch bowl here, but I don’t think that solution would really be all that helpful in this situation anyway.
Worth a try, sharks are attracted to distressed/weakened movements, like an ungainly human trying to swim.
But you’re probably right, they’ve turned up already, they’d probably take a bite just for the sake of politeness at this point
Hmmm? You put the life saver over your head and around your torso and then the people on the boat pull you out of the water. It’s pretty much his only chance: get out of the water before a shark attacks.
If you lounge on top of it with your head, arms, and feet out of the water, maybe they would only eat your ass?
they aren’t goblin sharks
Made me smile 😃
Wasn’t there a song during the pandemics, precisely about this, with the author swearing, and also kind of mad that this was his biggest hit? I can’t remember the title.
EDIT: Found the song this made me think about, but it’s milder than I remembered. It’s “Well, This Is Shit”.
I don’t know why; it just popped into my head. Maybe because the float would just make snacking easier for the sharks?
Edit: because my home server insists on rewriting all image URLs to proxy requests through that server, and it often breaks things. I gotta re-home.
Get it, because women, am i right?
I think the roles are stereotypically reversed
Is that’s what’s going on? It was a bit too subtle and nuanced, went right over my head.
Boomer humor
Problem solvers get shit on in all age groups, friend. Tons of people of all ages have serious trouble admitting they need help.
Nah, I think this flows through the ages. Maybe that makes me a boomer
Boomer is a mindset. You too can be a boomer*!
*Except for the wealth, that is.
That’s brilliant. The thumbnail spoils it… at least, it shows me the punchline.
People talk like they think they’re gonna win and look awesome when they say this.
It’s taking more work every day to keep my mind open to the possibility.
I’d like to hear an explanation for why you think this.
