    Woah.

Do we know if Mercer will be playing as a PC? Surely he won’t just go into hiding for the whole Campaign 4 or whatever.

Edit: Ok. I’m watching the official Campaign 4 announcement on the CR YouTube channel and they do confirm that Matthew Mercer will be playing a character in Campaign 4.

he’ll be visiting the team at Critical Role as their Game Master for the next core campaign of the tabletop role-playing game, actual-play series’.

That’s the actual quote from the article. It could be implying that Brandon is taking over the next campaign, but to me it sounds like he’ll be visiting as an occasional GM the same way he did for events around campaign 3. That’s cool, I think. The entire crew thrives on collaboration.

Mulligan will serve as Game Master for the full duration of Campaign 4

Mulligan takes over the role from Critical Role’s staple Game Master, Matt Mercer, who will be taking “a bit of a breather” this campaign

Nah, it really sounds like Mercer has no plans to GM any of Campaign 4. I’d imagine he’ll GM a one-shot here or there during the campaign. But it’s going to be such a different era. Can’t say I blame Mercer. He has to have been absolutely eating, breathing, dreaming, and thinking absolutely nothing but GM prep since they first premiered on Geek and Sundry early in Campaign 1. I’m exhausted just imagining it.

I do hope he plays as a player, though.

I have yet to watch any Dimension 20 or otherwise see Mulligan in action. Not to say I doubt him or anything. But I’ll be seeing Mulligan as GM for the first time with CR Campaign 4. It’ll be wild to see. I’m looking forward to it, but I imagine it’ll be an adjustment.

Edit: Ok. I’m watching the official Campaign 4 announcement on the CR YouTube channel and they do confirm that Matthew Mercer will be playing a character in Campaign 4.

I guess I didn’t navigate the ads properly to the end of the article. Thanks for clarifying. We’ll see how it pans out. I don’t think Matt needs to be the forever GM for the crew to be successful. And it’s nice to see Mercer get a chance to do some deeper role playing a single character instead of a handful of shallower NPCs.

Check out exandria unlimited calamity. I watched that first and couldn’t really get into MM gmed CR campaigns afterward.

I wonder if this will negatively affect their ratings. This is a big change and Mercer is a huge draw for the show. I haven’t enjoyed most of their non-mainline material for this reason, he’s my biggest draw.

Brandon is a next level DM, easily on par with Mercer. His voicework, improv, experience and enthusiasm for DnD is amazing. Hes been DMing for over 20 years, has run endless campaigns, and D20 has sold out venues like madison square gardens for shows. Hes got serious chops.

It will be different, it may be worse, but it may be better.

Idk if it’s a troll comment or not, but I do believe that Mercer tried to give the players more imaginative and creative freedom.

That may have been what you were picking up on as possibly him not leading as much as he has in the past.

Campaign 3 was all about Matt’s story and nothing else. It was shown repeatedly that player choice mattered far less than the story Matt wanted to tell. Campaign 3 showcases Matt’s worst Dm’ing. Also all the God bullshit, they should not try to tell a story about religion when not a single one of them gives a shot about it.
