As fighting continues between Israel and Hamas, social discord is emerging in Germany.

I hate that so much. I hate having to justify myself because of my ethnicity. Just because of who my parents are, I have to explain every time that no, I’m not Israeli, I don’t condone their actions.

I do truly sympathize with Palestinians in interviews who get hit with “Do you condemn Hamas?” at the beginning of every single one as a purity test. I get hit with “Do you condemn Israel?” in any conversation on this topic recently.

Some years ago I concluded that the essence of racism (and other such “-isms”) is the whole classifying people on things they were born with and which are not the product of their personal choices and then treating them as members of a category rather than as persons, something that’s anchored on an “they’re all the same” mindset.

The thing is, this means there really isn’t any such thing as “positive discrimination” because even a “positive” treatment for a category of people is still anchored on treating some people as a members of category which was not of their choosing, rather than as people.

So you end up with the strange effect that lots of people run around thinking of themselves as absolutelly not racist, yet categorizing others on things they were born with acting towards them as a “category” rather than “person”: in other words they’re prejudging other people because in their mind “they’re in a category” (in your case, somebody who as born from Jewish parents) - the very definition of prejudice - rather than starting from the only fair point when it comes to strangers (or on subjects not yet explored with that persion) in terms of expectations which is the tabula rasa.

And then, of course, on top of that you have the traditional racists.

So, people challenging the pro-colonialist propaganda that they have been fed for decades worries the German state - but the fact that their intelligence and security services have been filled to the brim with nazis ever since WW2 doesn’t?

German (or anyone elses) support for Israel is first and foremost challenged on the streets of Gaza City. Especially where houses, schools, and hospitals are bombed because the IDF thinks there might be terrorists.

The Germans aren’t allowed to have an opinion anymore.

I mean i’m totally against what Israel is currently and has been doing, but i do understand the perspective, there IS a lot of antisemite(as in anti-jew) mixing in with the protest, and it shows in a lot of incident, and that need to be tackled and condemned as well.

yes it has to be condemed, but not in the way of “we cannot tolerate hate against jews, we must support israel”

for us states are separate from religion, i can condemn the cruelty of israel without hating jews. i can condemn the cruelty of the hamas without hating moslems.

but if anybody is against israels current actions they are instantly marked as antisemitic, so they animate more hate against israel, and the real antisemites get cocky.

if critique about a country, a party, a politician or an opinion becomes a hate crime, we’re just a short step away from fascism

I did, and it’s just as one-sided as most of the articles i see, some are only pro palestine, some are only pro-israel, but i am german, i don’t want to pick a side, just like in a football match.

i find it appalling, how israel (not “the jews”, but the state) treated palestinians for the last about 60 years, it’s an apartheid system designed to oppress them.

i find it appalling that the hamas attacked israel targetting mostly civilians.

i find it appalling how israel supported by all western countries sets gaza under siege, and mass murders civilians an terrorists alike, and talk about them as if they were animals.

i dont want to pick sides, both are disgusting.

just because germany tried to eradicate the jews 80 years ago does not mean i will support the state of israel to eradicate the palestinians.

first, that was before the current conflict.

second, i dont’t say there arent nazis in germany ther are about 100% more nazis in germany than i would like, but its the same in every country.

third, it is MY opinion, not to pick sides, there are enough people that act on "the enemy of my enemy is my friend " so nazis can support hamas, as stupid as it sounds…

i just think the politicians handle it badly when the intertwine the guilt of the holocaust with the unconditional support for israel, because the israel of today has nothing to do with the oppressed and hunted jews of WW2, they are now the oppressors.

the hamas is condemned for their actions, israel should be, too

Again, did you read the article? The petrol bomb case was just an example of something that has skyrocketed since the war

Sorry, i didn’t realise the conflict started already over a month ago, too much sleep deprivation does weird things to my brain.

but still, most of the article talks about how some people perceive their security, not how bad it really is.

i know there are lost of assholes in germany, but i have to repeat myself, the politicians make it worse, when everybody that doesn’t support israel is instantly antisemitic and anti-zionist.

does ANYBODY think that a person will support israel against their own moral codex when they are called an antisemite, or will the person more likely BECOME an antisemite?
