This link about Glance made me think about this.
Majority of folks here might not be aware of this company. Their software usually ships on low end phones mainly in the Indian/South Asian market. They do seemed to have pivoted to the US as well but I am not sure if overseas models also see this scourge. As of right now, if one’s phone has this, they will basically see a new glorified wallpaper with news/text each time they unlock their phone. And if you read the article, they wish to go even furthur. It can technically be switched off though often it’s buried deeper than Dante’ s last layer of hell.
Do overseas(read:other Asian markets/European/American and so on) also have any local equivalent to this scourge from my country? Are ads plastered on lock screens on entry level phones common anywhere else in the Android world?
Not a phone, but probably the most mainstream example in the US market: Amazon devices often use lock screen ads by default. They charge $15-$20 more to buy a version of the device without those ads or to get them removed from an existing device. Affects both Fire HD tablets (which use a version of Android without Google services) and Kindle epaper devices (which aren’t Android).
While I don’t recommend buying an Amazon device these days, if you have an older one you want to use, you can send support an email telling them you bought an ad free one and it still has ads. They’ll turn them off.
Xiomy (if I spelled correctly) does nasty jobs than this. They have ads everywhere. Even while installing apps. I have seen it on since peoples phone
I think it’s Xiaomi. Either case, that brand does put lots of useless stuff. Other Chinese OEMs do it too. Realme puts obnoxious junk even on its high end GT7 series.
Yeah i have also seen them. Realme xiaomi and other chines devices are full of bloat. I mean bloat that are actual trash. Weird app stores, weird browsers and weird shit that claims to be antivirus that scans everything. I bet not a single person uses them. I know a guy who has a vivo device. This one went further they even don’t let you use adb to uninstall since shit apps. Oh yeah I forgot notification ad
Motorola basically does this too: Live Lock Screen, an app owned by Taboola News.
I just searched for it and apparently, Moto pushed this app to some of it’s devices via a OTA update. It’s ironic because Motorola phones [atleast the midrange ones] have a relatively bloat free reputation.
I assume it got worse because lenovo bought the smartphone division of Motorola years ago. Back then, yeah they were the bomb. I still look back fondly of my Moto Z Play. Its astounding what they did with it. Such “paltry” specs but it ran like a champ. Bloat from future android versions and moto getting acquired by lenovo put it down sadly.
Yep, this exactly.
I have a Moto G55 because they are one of the fewer out there with a LCD screen (i wanted a phone that was not prone to static images, such as navigation on highest brightness for many hours a week and i really, really don’t like Oled ghosting/black smearing). But sadly, due to bugs and bloatware, Motorola is a no-go.
Such a shame… the G2 was probably the phone i loved most of all i had over the years.
