This actually would have happened even if they used a more traditional statistical model instead of machine learning, because their entire method seems to have been to collect a small amount of real data and then to use that data to infer the state for the rest of the land that they didn’t survey.

The difference is probably that when someone said the magic word: “AI,” all critical thinking and statistical rigour went out the window.
