For more context look at the following posts
Look up what “Uplifting” means - https://lemmy.world/post/30071584

For voting - I will not use the post upvotes and downvotes as the vote, and instead, vote on the comments which are highlighted (spoken as moderator, in case your ui does not show them differently, just sort the comments by oldest).
This will essentially remove the votes of people who did not bother reading this line (I have no problem with someone being busy, and one may not have time to read) but someone who just reads titles and moves on is not really even caring about what community a post came from, and may just treat it is a post from news community. This is inspired somewhat by someones comment of thee first linked post, where they said they upvoted stuff but did not pay attention to what community they belonged to (I am not hating on them, actually it is great of them to admit what they did, which in itself is not wrong).
yes - ban politics and ban catharsis
IMHO the top comment on the post you linked is the best: No schadenfreude (defined as “pleasure in other people’s misfortune”).
Lacking that, banning politics and catharsis will do.
no - do not ban politics and do not ban catharsis
This comment from yesterday’s thread was perfect, I think: https://tkohhh.social/post/289633/1295767
To quote: “War is not uplifting. Fascism is not uplifting. Pollution is not uplifting. Murder is not uplifting. Famine is not uplifting. Bigotry is not uplifting. Genocide in particular is not uplifting.”
Any of those things ENDING is uplifting news, but celebrating because a despot stubbed his toe is not uplifting.
Also, I don’t think “catharsis” and “schadenfreude” are interchangeable. When people talk about schadenfreude they are specifically talking about feeling good because something bad happened. Catharsis is a much broader term that would likely be too restrictive for this type of community.
I don’t think we need to ban politics or catharsis, only the “orphan crushing machine” type posts.
Like a post about a handful of kids in Gaza getting bread for the first time in two months isn’t uplifting, it’s a reminder that hundreds or thousands of kids and other people have been starving under Israel’s genocide for months and years, and still don’t have enough food.
Catharsis as in just schadenfreude, right? Can’t we just ban that but not catharsis since a lot of stuff can be argued to be political?
I am OK with banning politics.
