Third-party or self hosted GitLab FTW.

Youtube is kind of hard to replace, though. There’s attempts but I’m skeptical they’ll go far.

How many YouTube competitors have risen up and died since it first started? PeerTube is fine but there’s no AdSense so the really big an medium sized ones won’t move over. There aren’t enough viewers for sponsorships to be worth while so it’s purely passion that will drive people to upload onto it, which is great but it basically limits the uploads to people who are techy enough or care enough about decentralization to go out of their way to not get payed.

              Take the win.

I mostly just use GitHub for work. I don’t think the social media bits matter.

Except stars. I’ve been told investors use stars as a proxy for interest lately. I see how bots these make a lot of sense.

All this bots stuff reminds me of an off hand part of Anathem. They had this historical arms race of garbage spread on their internet. There’s these monk folks who have been fighting it for generations. I thought it was sill years ago. Feels sane now.

Github is pretty amazing, better than Gitlab or Forgejo imo, however, fuck Microsoft.

Why is GitHub better than GitLab? Did I miss something big or are you refering to smaller differences in function? I thought GitLab offered basically the same core functionality as GitHub.

the interface is not near as slow and clunky IMO, and it’s always broken when using JShelter extension for me

I’m impressed it hasn’t become a bloated copilot mess like all other Microsoft products have. It’s still relatively as quick and functional as it’s ever been.

I wouldn’t say it’s perfect. Definitely not. But it’s definitely on the highest end of Microsoft owned products.

Probably because it’s very similar to how it was before they bought it.

I primarily do not use it for development though. So take that with a grain of salt. Some small projects I contribute to still.

Just give it time. Microsoft’s modus operandi is EEE; they’re just having to contend with the absolutely massive user base, so they’re moving much more slowly.

GitHub certainly is as “functional” as it’s ever been, and no more. Basic search is still laughable, for example.

            Better in what way?

There are certainly others but … git is the defacto standard for a reason.

There are certainly use cases for others, just wondering what you mean?

              1. Git is for bazaar-style development. However, most of my own projects are cathedral-style.
              2. Git’s default user experience (CLI command syntax, for example) is weird. There are reasons why Git GUIs are popular and (e.g.) SVN GUIs never were.
              3. Git is rather spammy in terms of hard disk usage.

Depends on the task. SVN or Fossil (if you need a web interface) for cathedral-style, Mercurial for bazaar-style, I’d say. Especially because of their easy to understand UX.

                1. Nothing is preventing git from being used for cathedral development.

                2. Nothing is preventing you from using any of the plethora of frontends available.

                3. If all of your projects are a single file, you have much deeper problems than selecting source control.

I feel like YouTube one can lead into another. Because it’s hard to get people to follow you in GitHub. But having another platform where you can advertise your programs means a lot. Even if you write something useful people are not going to discover you without something else doing the outreach.

Theres been a LOT of bots on github lately. They mass follow each other. Its pretty easy to see them as they will have 1k+ followers and follow just as many. Theres growing scams and acounts where you can buy GH accounts online that are “primed” with followers so your account looks good.
