Edit: The rules are changing for permanent residents - see article.

Temporary residents are allowed to keep using their overseas license.

Australian Road Rules are a lot different to road rules in other countries.

Reiterating them with people who know how to drive, but don’t know how to drive in Australia will certainly make DashCams Australia less interesting.

That said, for every one person using an Overseas licence who drives in a reckless manner (by Australian legal standards), there are dozens of people with Australian Licences who drive recklessly due to arrogance, stubbornness or just pure selfishness.

      Yeah, that makes sense.

I just wanted to be a bro and throw this info out there so people know.

It changed overnight and the penalties for driving without a valid license can be fines or jail.

Well said. This change might help, but not nearly as much as better education and enforcement of our existing laws, and most importantly better road design would.

The title is false. Here is a copy-pasta:

“Permanent residents in Australia who use their overseas licence on Aussie roads…”

A title suggestion refused to pop up so I tried to paraphrase my imperfect understanding of this.

“The EDR allowed international citizens permanently residing in Australia to transfer their overseas licence to an Aussie one without sitting further exams. However, this will end in most states and territories across Australia on Wednesday.”

I can change it but honestly the finer points of what this article is saying are confusing to me - someone born here who does not drive.

A law just changed overnight so I threw this article out there so any affected people can know.

My interpretation of the article is that there are two parts.

        • Those permanent residents (from select countries) who are still using their international license will be driving illegally, since the license won’t be valid anymore, and
        • The people wanting to convert their international license (from select countries) into an Australian one will need to sit the Australian exams

So, those that haven’t converted their licenses will need to do so, and sit an exam to get the Aussie licence. But it sounds like the ones that have already converted the license and are driving on an Aussie license will (should?) not be affected.

Cheers, that makes sense. For some reason got it twisted.

I’ll just change it to ‘changes to drivers license rules for permanent residents’ or something
