THIRD RAIL: Conservative people in USA appear to distrust science more broadly than previously thought. Distrust science that does not correspond to their egoism. Trust is also lower in fields that contribute to better health, economic growth and productivity.

Conservative people in America appear to distrust science more broadly than previously thought. Not only do they distrust science that does not correspond to their worldview. Compared to liberal Americans, their trust is also lower in fields that contribute to economic growth and productivity. Short interventions aimed at strengthening trust have little effect. This is apparent from new research by social psychologists at the University of Amsterdam, which has now been published in Nature Human Behaviour.

Science helps solve major societal problems, such as pandemics and climate change. But if people do not trust scientists, they will be less likely to accept scientific solutions.‘In America, but also in other countries, conservatives generally have lower trust in science,’ says one of the researchers involved, Bastiaan Rutjens. ‘Since the 1980s, trust of science among conservatives in America has even been plummeting.’

Part of the explanation is that scientific findings do not align with conservatives’ political or economic beliefs. ‘But science is also increasingly dismissed in some circles as a “leftist hobby”, and universities as strongholds of the leftist establishment,’ Rutjens adds. The researchers wanted to gain more insight into how trust varies across scientific fields and whether short interventions could strengthen trust.

Vukašin Gligorić, Gerben van Kleef, and Bastiaan Rutjens, 2025, ‘Political ideology and trust in scientists in the US’, in: Nature Human Behaviour

Rutjens contributed to this study, which was led by his PhD student Vukašin Gligorić. Gligorić recently obtained his PhD doctorate at the University of Amsterdam and will start this Spring as postdoctoral researcher at the NYU Abu Dhabi.

Another striking finding was that none of the five interventions succeeded in increasing conservatives’ trust in scientists. Even when the message was well-aligned with their values, their attitude hardly changed. ‘This suggests that their distrust is deeply-rooted and not easily changed,’ says Rutjens.

Third Rail: My experience in USA

I experience that conservatives do massive mental gymnastics to avoid defining what “conserving” means. What are they conserving? I keep asking what they think “conservative” means in other nations. It means The Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan - and you know who a liberal is, Malala! !Malala@lemm.ee. Conservative means Saudi Arabia and Iran! You want the USA to be like Iran?

Why can’t they publish a list of “this is what we mean by conservative” values, and cite them by name? It’s such a wildcard meaning.

They do not seem to support the Amish Americans who are conservative in technology values.

Do they think “conservative” means women can not work in offices and must stay at home raising children and cooking food?

Does economic “conservative” to USA people in year 2025 mean Elon Musk can purchase any politician or law that he wants, including Donald Trump? That Big Business can pollute waters and air and not be held accountable? Because that is what de facto it seems to mean!

Time and time again, my conclusion points towards the whole thinking of “liberal vs. conservative”, “left vs. right” is a mistaken constant emphasis of division. Nobody seems to be focused on fiction vs. non-fiction !FictionNonFiction@lemm.ee attraction. Including this study.

It is almost as if “conservative” in the USA year 2025 means: I repeat what Rupert Murdoch media systems say and I do not believe we should deviate from the teachings of Rupert Murdoch. It seems a topic far more of media loyalty and media ecology (Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman topics) than of politics! It’s about being against freedom of the mind in favor of follow the Rupert Murdoch media signals.

      Third Rail even more bluntly

It is as if the “common ground” of the “conservatives” in the USA year 2024 and year 2025 is: “We all watch Fox News and Newsmax and Elon Musk X social media systems” and that is the common ground, whatever the values expressed by those media systems. We all heard Joe Rogan’s podcast last week, so we all agree on this topic. I’m not exaggerating, I’m not mocking, I’m describing what I witness in USA society April 2025!

How else can you explain the open embrace of Vald Putin / Russia by the “conservatives” who used to support Ronald Reagan and being against Russia? Russia has even gotten worse and more aggressive since the fall of the USSR and Berlin Wall! Russia is mind-fucking the children of the USA with no defense since March 2013! Do parents not even know Russia has infiltrated all media systems with pro-Russia mind-bending, including video gaming influencers?

THIRD RAIL: The “common ground” of USA 2025 “conservatives” is common media consumption. They all consume fiction garbage they believe is non-fiction. Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones, Elon Musk X, Donald Trump Reality TV “The Apprentice” star, etc.
