According to a new study by the Angus Reid Institute, 76% of Canadians say they’re boycotting American products.

61% of Canadians also say they’re cancelling or delaying trips to the U.S., while 86% say they’re buying more Canadian products.

“The cross-border data already proves it: Canadians are cutting back their travel to the U.S. to levels last seen during COVID-19. These numbers may drop further, considering that 3 in 5 Canadians say they’re cancelling or delaying plans to travel across the border. In addition to this, the proportion of Canadians saying they’re boycotting American products or buying more Canadian products is already high and appears to be growing.”

This isn’t just a Trump thing either.

George W. Bush and his cronies attacked Canada when Canada refused to join the second adventure in Iraq. Canada sent troops to Afghanistan, but said it would only go into Iraq if the UN inspectors actually found weapons of mass destruction, which they never did. In response to that the Bush Admin said “you’re either with us or you’re with the terrists”. Americans started boycotting Canadian things, etc. The “Freedom Fries” incident was more well known internationally, but Canadians who were around for those Bush years still remember that first betrayal.

Then Trump was president, and he trashed Canada and imposed reckless tariffs. Ok. Canadians understand about gerrymandering, the electoral college, and how Clinton actually won more votes. It wasn’t the majority of Americans that were voting Trump into office.

Then Trump tried to overthrow the government in a coup. Finally a chance to set things right. But no, nothing happend.

And then in 2024, US voters made their preferences clear, electing Trump again with a clear majority this time, and giving him a majority in the House and Senate.

So, now it’s clear. This is who the US is now. The US is not a reliable ally. Even if another Obama or Biden gets elected next time, it’s just a matter of a few years before the US chooses another fucking Republican who will shit all over Canada again.

There’s an old saying in Canada that says, ‘Fool me once, shame on…shame on you. Fool me—you can’t get fooled again.’

Democrats who think they can just elect Mitt Romney or whatever and call it even are gonna be in for a surprise. Lasting damage has been done. Without justice and consequences for the perpetrators and major systemic changes US leadership is gone.

They’ll try to maintain hegemony by force, but then they’ll see what Afghanistan or Vietnam might have been like if they were next door with easy access across the world’s largest and sparsely guarded border.

The American people need to do something to make friends of us again.

The American people need to do something to make friends of us again.

I don’t think it’s that simple. When the Democrats are in charge they’re friendly. But, it’s always just a matter of time before Republicans take over and Canada gets targeted again. I think we’re in for a longer period of chilly relations because the Americans just can’t be trusted.

That’s what I mean, they have to break that cycle. Biden barely slowed things down after Trump. We want serious change. Americans are coming across as super fucked right now.
