I often come across ideas for new communities (sometimes I even have them myself), but I’m not always sure whether they would get traction.
How about a “suggest a community” community, where people can post suggestions, and get feedback on the idea, maybe tweak it a bit to be more useful, and also look for co-moderators?
It could act in parallel to !newcommunities@lemmy.world
Anyone have any ideas for how this could work better? Anyone want to co-moderate one?
There’s more-or-less already an active community for that: !communitypromo@lemmy.ca
From their description:
Promote your favourite communities here, or ask about a community you are looking for
A post titled like “Is there a community for TOPIC?” with text in the body indicating you’re interested in making one if not would likely do well there.
That seems much more like this community, !newcommunities@lemmy.world …
There’s a lot of overlap, but the other is a bit more general purpose (not just new communities). I joined both to help with community discovery.
Makes sense. It would be good if the mods added links between them to each community’s sidebar.
Not quite the same thing, but that looks very complimentary, thanks!
It’s not the single purpose of the community, but there have been threads were people discuss a community before creating or reviving one
With a name like that, no wonder why I never found it.
411 brings it up for me.
Yes, but first you would need to know that: 411 = “I can’t find a specific community because it doesn’t have a logical name, so can you help me out.” Ironically, the name 411 embodies the problem perfectly.
This is giving me some serious chicken and egg vibes.
It’s riffing off a Canadian/US telephone directory. Agreed, not a universally useful name…
Really? I had to look it up, and I found out that it was shut down in late 80s.
So that’s good to know next time I happen to be speaking with someone who is both old enough and from a particular part of the world.
it was shut down in late 80s.
Interesting, i worked for 411 untill '98 and my daughter’s mother worked there into 2001 at least.
Apparently there’s a mistake. Feel free to update the article.
What about !fedigrow@lemm.ee ?
That seems like a related, but different thing. More like a community search?
Also the name is meaningless outside Canada, so not that easy to find for the rest of us…
edit, sorry Canada and the US: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/411_(telephone_number)
I’d like this, too!
There’s also !findacommunity@lemmy.ml and !findasub@lemmy.world
Awesome, thanks!
Hey Mods, any chance you could add some links to some.of the communities mentioned here to the sidebar?
@Akhuyan@lemmy.world @technopagan@lemmy.world @Imotali@lemmy.world @Maggoty@lemmy.world
