Hi. I am a beginning sewist. I’ve sewed a hand full of small objects. Now I’m sewing my second garment using a commercial pattern. The pattern is rated easy. I am slowly getting through it. But I wish the directions were clearer. Does anyone have recommendations for patterns that are clear and specific for a beginner? Thanks.
My go to for a ready to follow experience where I don’t need to think twice on how the next step works is pattydoo. German tailor who makes great instruction videos and has fair prices (most pdf are 4€). She has good beginner friendly patterns
Even works when you get your pattern from somewhere else (use it in combination with freesewing.org a lot, making a pattern there that fits me 1:1 then go to pattydoo to see how to fiddle in the zipper on the jeans etc)
I really like the patterns offered by Wardrobe By Me. As I’ve settled into them, my wife has started enjoying their camp shirts and perfect tunic.
WBM has generally clear instructions and most patterns also have an instructional video, which can really help learn how to parse pattern instructions.
For men, the tropical shirt is a great starter. I grew into making Jensen shirts, then men’s tunics.
For women the camp shirt really is a great first pattern with woven fabric.
I’m making the “Big Shirt” for my niece now and I think it also has good instructions.
I haven’t done much sewing but I found Tilly and the Buttons to be very clear and easy to follow. It helped that the pattern I was following had a YouTube video along with it. But the pattern itself was clear and straightforward as well.
I find that the patterns from Love Notions are pretty good especially if marked as easy, and I also made my first bag from a free Swoon pattern and it turned out great.
