    Took me a moment: in Germany at least, you don’t start a PhD without a master”s degree.

    If others are confused as well: elsewhere it’s different, I believe?

      That’s usually the case in the US as well. I think Mr. Weinersmith just took some creative liberties for the sake of the joke.

        Nope. I started but didn’t finish a PhD in physics, and only needed a Bachelor’s to get into the program. You automatically earn the Master’s along the way in some programs, usually after you pass the qual.
