Donald Trump, at his first cabinet meeting, said he believed the US is negotiating “very successfully” with Russia and Ukraine.
The US president suggested that a ceasefire deal is close. “We’re going to make a deal with Russia and Ukraine to stop killing people,” he told reporters.
Asked if he is willing to make security guarantees as part of the deal, Trump replied:
I’m not going to make security guarantees beyond very much … We’re going to have Europe do that, because Europe is the next door neighbour.
He added that the US will be partnering with Ukraine “in terms of rare earth.” “We very much need rare earth, they have great rare earth,” Trump said.
Trump said it was “great deal for Ukraine too, because they get us over there, we are going to be working over there”.
the reason they gave up their nuclear weapons was that it was an expensive and cumbersome responsibility that they had no practical use for outside of dirty bombs and terrorist tactics, as they didnt have the means to launch the missiles.
an often forgotten bit of information too, is that during this time, the USA was NOT friendly with Ukraine, the US Government did not Trust Ukraine an inch, and was not going to tolerate them to have nuclear weapons.
in 1991 the world went from having like 7 Nuclear states, to 10 all in the blink of an eye. and the 7 who were there before, wanted the new crowd removed immediatley from the club
The world treated the Russian Federation as if it was the replacement for the USSR, and Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan were not going to be tolerated keeping these weapons, if they did, they would have been treated like North Korea or Iran.
Wait till they see how expensive and cumbersome fighting a war is…
What do you have to say about Ukrainians setting up defenses other than nukes?
I dont think the Ukrainians in 1991 thought that Russia was going to launch a full scale invasion against them in 2022.
even though they were seperate countries and nations, with a rocky history. Russia, Ukraine and Belarus mutually agreed to leave the Soviet Union as independent entities. I dont think they were anticipating a fascist heel turn in Russia so soon. Remember it was the Drunk Yeltsin in power at that time, Putin didnt come into the picture for another 5-8 years
