Does anyone else here use https://cryptpad.fr/ ?
I’m loving it so far- it’s probably the best privacy focused g suite alternative I’ve found. It’s easy enough to use that even the non-technical among us can use it
Me and my team are planning to use it for the upcoming https://wrccdc.org/ competition.
During the regionals competition, we go to a physical location and are not allowed to bring our own electronics. In addition, there is a firewall with an allowlist, meaning we have to ask for stuff to be unblocked, or self host services we will want/need.
Crytpad is small enough that it can be deployed during competition without much fuss, and it allows for collaborative editing, which is useful for things like sharing passwords.
I haven’t heard of that competition, but it looks really cool.
Outside of the competition, does your team self host cryptpad?
I ended up paying for a subscription- I wanted to support the development + it being E2E alleviates most of my concerns about storing info in the cloud.
Also, I’m honest with myself to know that cryptpad.fr probably has a better backup setup than my Proxmox mini PC + Synology combo 😅
Outside of the competition, does your team self host cryptpad?
Not yet :(
We use a service called Box, in combination with Microsoft office online, and it sucks.
Is that this tool?
I haven’t heard of it before- is it kind of similar to cryotomator?
No, box is it’s own cloud storage platform, like drive. But it doean’t have it’s own alternative to google docs/sheets/etc, sp it integrates the web versions of microsoft word/excel/etc.
Good luck with the competition!
I mainly use offline tools like onlyoffice, but i love cryptpad. It’s the best office suite for privacy. Highly recommend.
It’s fine but it’s really slow and basic.
I actually haven’t found it that slow, but I’ve also kept my expectations low. I’m willing to allow some slowness in the initial document load time if it means I get some privacy.
It takes like 10 seconds to open a document
I haven’t had it take that long, but I have noticed that loading time varies between mobile and desktop. Not surprisingly, the more powerful device loads the document faster
Edit: You’re right- it takes like 10 seconds on my phone. I decided to time it
Wow! Incredible! Ten whole seconds?
Just enough time for me consider thinking if I go for a coffee in the meantime.
If you like waiting around for things, that’s your prerogative. It’s not my preference.
