      Yea that’s the prevailing theory. Because of Jupiter’s size and position in our solar system it likely intercepts a lot of the nastiest asteroids that are big enough that an impact with earth would wipe out all life. It’s also believed that if it were not for Jupiter life might not have been able to evolve on earth at all

        it’s a bit of a double edge sword though. jupiter also throws stuff at us as well. (https://www.planetary.org/articles/does-jupiter-protect-earth-from-asteroids-and-comets)

        But isn’t the asteroid belt there a belt and not a planet because of Jupiter? That sounds more like a racket to me
