They probably can’t, just like Geordi La Forge from Star Trek TNG couldn’t see through his solid white contacts during scenes where he had to remove his visor.
Levar Burton, the actor that played Geordi, has said those were about the worst scenes he had to act in, wearing opaque contacts.

However, maybe there are partially reflective lenses that act more like mirrored sunglasses?
