Try some Anime with some more mature intrigue:

    • Apothecary Diaries (Detective series from a medical/herbalogical perspective)
    • Frieren (the aftermath of being an immortal and watching your friends die)

I’m not super into anime, no connoisseur by any measure, but I recently felt like there might be something great to watch in that area. I looked up highly rated anime and Frieren came up.

I’ve watched a few episodes and it seems, well there’s no question it’s well made and a great story, but it’s pretty heavy. Sad at times. Does it get happier and more fun, or is this the tone throughout?

If so I might have to try something else.

You’ll never be too old. There’s so many genres and stories to watch, you’ll get pulled back in.

    I’m 27 and I’ve definitely out-aged some of it.

Came back to anime recently after not watching for 3-4 years and Demon Slayer and JJK have been great.

Tried to pick up Boku No Hero again tho… no. Too old for that now.

Yeah, I get you. The whole highschool setting in so many animes/mangas thing is kind of… I can do without it, honestly. Which is why I’m more into Seinen series, less of that kind of stuff.

My problem with some seinen animes are how edgy and how much they try hard with all the “adult” scenes. The older I get, the more I think that gratuitous sexual or gore scenes are more interesting to teenagers, or maybe that’s just me being overexposed to that kind of content too early.

Of course like anything else, there are good and bad , regardless of its demographic groups. I have all-time-favorites from all demographic groups (shoujo, shonen, josei, seinen) that are close to my heart. Vice versa, all of them have their fair share of meh stuff.

I think that’s more to do with the writing quality than anything, really. As you’ve said, there’s Shonen stuff that isn’t just generic Highschool drama stuff, like HxH and JJK as previously mentioned, but I tend to enjoy Seinen more than the average Shonen because the themes and settings are more relatable to me as an adult.

And I’m not going to lie, I kind of have a guilty pleasure for some edgy stuff every now and again.

Yeah, I can definitely still go for some shonen, but the younger side of it (like boku no hero) is difficult when it’s focused on the younger side of high school.

HunterxHunter was my favourite show for a long time, I’ve been thinking of doing a rewatch but dread the idea that it’s going to fall flat…

Being a late bloomer, I did briefly attain wizardry, but decided to trade in the powers shortly after. They were very overrated.
