I’ve lived in the south my entire life, and honestly don’t care for most sports. I hate to admit it, but this meme is 100% true.
Countless times I’ve been chatting with people in social situations and someone inevitably asks me who I think will win “the big game”… I like to think of myself as an honest person so I would always say something along the lines of “sorry, I don’t really follow sports” and said person, who was JUST talking to me like we were old friends, will suddenly look at me like I had a turd sticking out of my pocket.
Football really is like a religion down here. Honestly it’s probably more important to a lot people than religion. People act like a loved one died when their favorite team loses. It’s super weird lol
Okie here. It’s hard not being all the fuck about sports. I like football. I played football in school. But it doesn’t constitute the majority of my personality. My granddad ALWAYS has OU games on. It doesn’t matter if they’re #2 or #22 or got beat by Kansas. It doesn’t matter if they’re playing in the Rose Bowl or the Clorox™ Toilet Bowl. He’s practically consumed by it. I don’t understand it. I love going to the games. You go for the long walk in a loud crowd to end up inside and overpay for a shitty beer that gets warm in five minutes (because it’s 97 degrees), and after enduring all that, your guys might still lose. It actually kinda rocks.
But I prefer concerts. I get to dance to my favorite songs and watch my favorite aging 90s rockers put on a show for cheap because they haven’t been big in 20 years. A concert hardly goes south. But nobody shows up to the water cooler on Monday and goes, “How about that Weezer concert?”
It gets pretty awkward having to tell people you didn’t watch the game because sports is just not important to you.
You can make a game out of it. I once had a colleague who mastered it: didn’t care too much about most sports but knew which colleague liked which sport and which team. So he checked scores and every time a colleague’s favorite team lost he innocently asked at work how the game was. It’s risky since people can get really emotional about it but it’s usually lots of fun.
I would never be able to remember all of that lol
said person, who was JUST talking to me like we were old friends, will suddenly look at me like I had a turd sticking out of my pocket.
Which you usually had, but they don’t have to be RUDE about it!
bread and circuses to keep the masses distracted from the crisis that are actually killing us.
how fucking dare you disregard the distraction? it’s like they can’t fathom anyone who doesn’t chase the tennis ball, they can’t imagine what someone would do without the soap opera of sports to occupy their lives.
Is this US south or global south?
Cause honestly both probably work…
Futbol is life.
I was gonna say the football thing for the global South ended two weeks ago. Then I realized that wasn’t the World cup, but rather just the European championship. I know my football stuff. 👍
When the world has gone to shit sometimes you gotta focus on the only shred of fun or respite you can get. I too am looking forward to the distraction of football, if only for a few hours every week.
I agree.
I’ve done pretty much all I can. I am done with watching the news and being in panic all the time over things I cannot change.
Time to have some nice distractions now.
I swear ESPN only reluctantly acknowledges the existence of anything other than American football and basketball. A summer league, really? The season is already 11 months long, can we please get any time off?
Tomorrow!ohwaitwrongfootball
August 1st is the Hall of Fame game for anyone who cares about preseason football.
URUGUAY NOMÁAAAA
What did you just call me?
I’m pretty sure it is still better than most of the 20th century
