This is such a tough one. One the one hand, its possible that he really should never have been admitted in the first place. Canada needs to be more strict in who’s allowed to come and study work here.

On the other hand, this man is clearly remorseful and has taken responsibillity for the twist of fate that nobody could have forseen, although there have been warnings about that driving area going back a decade.

Its tough because he’s setting an insane precedent here. Its in some sense saying you can have a shitty trucking company and hire immigrants on the cheap, not train them sufficiently, and combined with the danger of that area already, allow this situation to happen and all its gonna be is a civil fine for you and deportation and/or prison for the chump you suckered into cheap labour.

    I dunno. Uggh

Yeah, the real criminals here are the transportation company here if you ask me. Their actions amount to negligence at best and reckless endangerment at worst if you ask me.

The fact that they are getting away with a fine while the driver gets both jail time and deportation is a miscarriage of justice if you ask me.

Furthermore, it’s clear he’s remorseful for what happened and does not pose a further risk to society. At the very least we should extend him the courtesy of a second chance.

or prison for the chump you suckered into cheap labour.

I’m not seeing the ‘or’ bit. The article says the driver was already sentenced to nine years back in 2019. So it might be prison and deportation.

It also says he was a new permanent resident when the crime was committed. I’m surprised how they can so easily deport someone who has PR.

allow this situation to happen and all its gonna be is a civil fine for you

Alas, this is the real problem. And this case/hearing isn’t going to affect the precedent on that, it will only affect the precedent for the future chumps.

He would have become inadmissible and lost his PR status for serious criminality due to his conviction in 2019

If anything, I would like there to be way more press coverage and investigative journalism and legal scrutiny paid to this little mom and pop friendly neighbourhood immigrant-staffed (like abusing as well) trucking company.

They really skated by while leaving this poor guy out to dry and down the river.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A federal judge has reserved his decision in the deportation case of the truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Jaskirat Singh Sidhu’s lawyer argued Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials who recommended his deportation didn’t factor in his previously clean record and remorse.

The CBSA has recommended Sidhu be handed over to the Immigration and Refugee Board to decide whether he should be deported to India.

Federal Court Chief Justice Paul Crampton said he would make releasing a decision a priority due to the gravity of the Humboldt case.

Sidhu was sentenced in 2019 to eight years after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in the Saskatchewan crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others.

Court previously heard the rookie Calgary trucker, a newly married permanent resident, went through a stop sign at a rural intersection and drove into the path of the bus carrying Humboldt Broncos players and staff in 2018.
