I remember having problems with it, too. And I even don’t like this level that much, you pretty much have to brute-force it through the mesh instead of thinking of a clever solution.
I found it quite satisfying when the first bash went all the way through, rather than having to continually click to get the lemmings to cut through it. It is an annoying level though.
I think it returns later (as do a few other levels) with different skills available.
