I don’t oppose applying for a waiver due to hardship reasons, but I am against 18-55 years Olds not working. The economy can’t support that many lazy people.
$1000/mo is still poverty levels of income. It’s enough to live, but barely. The incentive to work is still there. If you don’t want to live in a shithole and you want to eat more than bread and water, you’ll still need to work a regular job.
If we give a basic income to everyone, you can also end a lot of the current welfare programs, or at least cut a ton of the administration costs.
Also, your proposal to give it only to 55+ year olds to free up jobs doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. What problem is this trying to solve? There seems to be enough jobs for everyone as it is. We are currently at the lowest unemployment rate in 54 years. Birth rates have also been declining, so in the next few decades we should have an abundance of jobs, and a labor shortage instead.
It’s been proven that isn’t the case and providing ubi doesn’t cause people to stop working and be “lazy” in fact it’s the opposite, they tend to become more productive members of society and even if you do have the occasional “lazy” person guess what the money all goes back into the economy. We can easily afford to do it

Ah, you don’t want to work. Makes sense.
But those lazy 55 year old who don’t want to work are different, right?

Guy you’re talking to thinks there’s infinite money available.
