I’m surprisingly level-headed for being a walking knot of anxiety.
Ask me anything.
I also develop Tesseract UI for Lemmy/Sublinks

That is a power move lol. I would just tape Power Rangers and Pokemon during the day to watch after I got my homework done.
And don’t get me started on the microwave.
It knows what it did!
Plus, setting a VCR clock was always a pain in the ass.
Some were, some weren’t. I remember we had 3 different VCRs, and it was always different.
Oldest one. It had a row of like 30 buttons behind a pull-down panel. You held 'Clock" until the hours started flashing, used the up and down buttons to set the hour. Press clock again to switch to the minutes (same arrow keys to adjust), then one final press of “Clock” to lock it in. Literally the same way my oven clock is set.
Just press “Menu” then “Clock” and type the time in on the remote.
Newest: It was automatic. It picked up the time from the PBS channel and set itself.
Gen X and Millennials are probably the only ones who could program a VCR. Boomers would expect someone else to just take care of it, and Gen Z/Alpha prob wouldn’t even know what they’re looking at.
The internet has ruined me. I spent way too long looking for Sadaam.
What the hell happened? … I thought FlyingSquid was OK … I had lots of run-ins with them and every time I saw them as being pretty OK … opinionated and prolific but also pretty liberal and open minded on many things. I know that not everyone will agree with everything all the time, that is just human nature … we can’t all be OK with one another on everything on all issues, all the time.
…
So what happened? … it’s upsetting because when vague posts like this appear, it’s hard on us who are not fully clued into the community of mods and heavy posters who are plugged in with one another.
I’m not 100% read in on the story, and I’ve only heard authoritatively that he has quit Lemmy. I didn’t mean to be vague, but also, I didn’t want to disclose anything I may not be good to disclose (especially when I don’t have a firsthand account of the full story). Basically, I don’t want to spread / start any rumors.
I’m stating this all as an outside observer, but yeah, definitely opinionated and like you said, open minded on most things. Being a prolific contributor, he attracted a LOT of abuse from some real shithead accounts over the last few years. I’ve seen many of those accounts twist his words around, put words in his mouth, and make accusations/name call based off of those twisted and out-of-context quotes. For better or worse, Squid often didn’t know when to quit / just hit the block button. He was also the target of a few particular trolls (as were I and Jordan Lund, so he had a support group for that lol; those were more hilarious than traumatizing though)
I can only speak for myself in this regard, but stress like that is definitely cumulative. I have thought about leaving many times myself, but have instead block/banned my way to mental health. Perhaps he’ll come back some day, perhaps not.
I guess the modern equivalent to not setting the vcr clock is having all the default ring tones and notification noises for all your apps.
That was pretty much what I was thinking of: default ringtone, full volume.
True, but so did the oven and microwave clocks (and clock radios if you didn’t keep the 9V backup battery maintained). Clock radios are kind-of a given by their nature, but most of the time the oven and microwave clocks would get reset.
In general, they probably wouldn’t. But this post is basically a funeral / wake, so I guess “read the room” would be solid advice here.
I added a bit to my reply, but if you have decent libel laws in your country, you may be able to get a lawyer involved:
Initial lawsuit targets:
The troll in question … Has been banned from multiple places for being a Nazi apologist, transphobe, and pedophile
Ask yourself this: Do you really care what that person (or the kind of people who follow that person online) thinks?
Not sure what country you’re in, but in the US, you’re basically describing Alex Jones. He’s done this shit for years, and It took the Sandy Hook shooting survivors’ families to finally take him down, and he’s still fighting / shouting lies.
Best outcome is suing them for libel, but it’s going to be an uphill battle.
I get that, but even with limited choices, one is always worse than the other. More often than not, casting a vote is more damage control than expressing your support. And I wish people in my country would understand that. While they’re hemm-hawing around waiting for the perfect, ideologically pure candidate, the bad one is getting full support from his side.
This is why showing up to vote, not throwing your vote away, and making smart/informed choices at the ballot are so crucial. Once a bad politician digs in, good luck getting them out.
Disorganized, but I swear I have a system.
Rick Berman: Denise, doll, how are you? It’s Rick Berman.
Crosby (smart): [Hangs up]
Berman: Look, I’m doing a little project in Venezuela, and I think you’d be perfect for it. Hello?
(Edited to make Crosby even smarter)
That’s the thing. Most people did. The ones who didn’t seemed to go out of their way to be antagonistic. It’s a shame the jerks ultimately won, but I get why he quit / stepped away.
Edit: Going to use this comment as a soapbox. If someone is constantly antagonistic, putting words in your mouth, twisting your words, and making accusations based off of that, just do yourself a favor and block them (and if it’s bad enough, report them). I’m tired of seeing good people leave the platform because of harassment and trolls.
“I have a headache. Bring me one of the pink pills from my desk. Now, you’ll probably think it’s a paperweight; it’s not.”
You always wonder?
What are you, a cop??
