Summary

Iran criticized the reported beating of Iranian students by police at Kazan Federal University in Russia during a visa renewal dispute.

Two students were detained and later released after Iran’s consulate intervened.

Iranian officials demanded accountability and announced an investigation.

The incident strains ties between Iran and Russia, which have grown closer through defense and trade cooperation, including Iran’s supply of drones for Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“Aw. Did you think we were friends? Haha. You’re brown. When we said we didn’t have a problem with racism, we meant we have lots of it and don’t think it’s a problem. Even if you were to fully embrace Russian values as well as worship Putin, we’d still despise you. Still though, do you have any weapons you’d like to sell?”

Funny enough, nowadays Iran is far more free than Russia. They have “some kind of elections” which “within their ideological range” can be considered effective.(Basically as long as one manage to get by the religious control one has a certain chance of actually making it against opponents). And while insulting the religious bodies will surely land you in jail there is far more leeway towards the president - compared to Russia.

Russia is Putlers little bloody kingdom these days.

(And don’t get me wrong - Iran is still a horrible, oppressive, theocratic and surely unfree regime that is fucking up the whole region. But that’s from a western/northern perspective. If you compare Russia to Iran…well… One is a tad bit less shitty)

Iran’s government sucks, but this story really shows how the Iranian people are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Regular Iranians have more in common with western social values than those of the Iranian government or Russia - it’s been that way before, during, and after the Iranian revolution.

Not sure what the answer is, but they keep trying to protest and resist their government every few years and they get violently forced back into submission.

Of all the countries with screwed up regimes, Iran is one where I think it’s more appropriate to encourage more fluid immigration into western countries - a lot of their working age population is relatively better educated than many other countries too.
