Even tobacco can have medical use: I worked with a person that smoked to increase blood pressure, under medical advice. Wine and even whisky have been linked with having benefitial effects on cardiac function, when drank in moderation. In my understanding, the biggest issue is the way these substances are used and advertised. The notion of moderation is completely absent.
